Carlos Alcaraz

The first two sets of the Monte-Carlo Masters final were classic chess matches. Lorenzo Musetti played a cleaner first set and won 6-3. Carlos Alcaraz cleaned up his game in the second set and won 6-1.

Before the third set, fans were on their feet, applauding both players for the entertaining match thus far and anticipating what was to come. But it was not to be. Musetti, playing in his first career Masters 1000 final, was hampered by a leg injury near the tail end of the second set and dropped the final set 6-0.

Lorenzo Musetti’s Busy Week

Musetti spent over 13 1/2 hours on the court in Monte Carlo with many long three-set matches.  Whether that factored into his injury remains to be seen, but it was a shame to see him not able to play at the level he produced all week in the deciding third set.

Carlos Alcaraz Wins Maiden Monte-Carlo Masters Title

Alcaraz is well aware of the Spanish legacy at this tournament.  Rafael Nadal won it 11 times.  Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, won it twice.

Carlos Alcaraz was eager to continue the Spanish domination of this event.  A win in Monte Carlo comes with plenty of benefits for Alcaraz.  He moves up to World No. 2, wins his 18th career title, and he enters the Barcelona tournament as the top seed, overtaking Alexander Zverev.

One Week Or Two Week Masters 1000 Events?

Monte-Carlo Masters is a one-week Masters 1000 event.  Many of the others are going to two weeks, which allows players days off between matches in the early rounds.

There are arguments for and against one-week events.  Would Musetti have benefitted from days off between his matches this week?

Musetti’s struggle highlights yet again how difficult it is to win an ATP tournament.  A player can have a great week, but conditions outside of his control can hinder his success.  We hope Musetti’s injury is minor.
