Monte-Carlo Masters trophy

For those of us who thought the match of the Monte-Carlo Masters tournament was the quarterfinal between Arthur Fils and Carlos Alcaraz, we were wrong.  It was the see-saw tug-of-war semifinal between Lorenzo Musetti and Alex de Minaur.  Both men looked like they could win the match, and it was unclear who would pull through until the end.  Musetti keeps finding ways to win and is in his first Masters 1000 final. He will face Carlos Alcaraz, who has never been in the Monte-Carlo Masters final.

Facts about the Carlos Alcaraz vs. Lorenzo Musetti matchup

  1. Alcaraz has a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Musetti, but Musetti’s one win is on clay.
  2. Both were Paris Olympics medalists: Alcaraz won silver, and Musetti won bronze.
  3. Musetti lost the first set in four of his five matches this week at Monte Carlo.
  4. Lorenzo Musetti resides in Monte Carlo.  He will be the fan-favorite on Sunday.

Spain vs. Italy at the Monte-Carlo Masters

In the past 25 years, Spain won 13 Monte-Carlo Masters titles: 11 by Rafael Nadal, and 2 by Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Alcaraz’s coach.

Fabio Fognini is the only Italian man to win the title in the past 25 years.  He won it in 2019.

If Musetti wins, he would be just the third Italian man in the past 60 years to do so.  In addition to Fognini, Nicola Pietroangeli won three times in the 1960s.

The pressure will be on Alcaraz to win the title because of his resume and the Spanish dominance. Musetti has played unbelievable and inspired tennis, making an upset very possible. Musetti will have the most fans cheering for him. Alcaraz will be in an unusual position of not being the favorite in the stadium.  How both handle their newfound roles will be an interesting part of this match.

The Monte-Carlo Masters final will be telecast live on the Tennis Channel at 6 AM EDT on Sunday, April 13.
