Monte-Carlo Masters: Carlos Alcaraz Edges Arthur Fils In Quarterfinal Thriller

In a match befitting a final, Carlos Alcaraz edged out Arthur Fils in a three-set quarterfinal thriller at the Monte-Carlo Masters. This was the first career meeting for the early twenties tennis stars, and if it is any indication of what is to come, tennis fans should be thrilled.
Alcaraz again started sluggish and found himself down 0-3. Fils matched Alcaraz with power and movement, taking the first set 6-4.
The second set was also tight with Alcaraz prevailing 7-5.
In the third set, Alcaraz was down 1-3 but won five straight games.

Episode 1 Of The Carlos Alcaraz And Arthur Fils Slugfest
100 miles per hour winners and great shotmaking were the hallmarks of this match.
Fils’ forehand was jaw-dropping at times, and he led Alcaraz in each set.

Unreal effort from Carlos
Down 5-5, 0-40 in set 2

Alcaraz is 21 with four Grand Slams under his belt. Fils is 20 and working his way up. Alcaraz’s experience in these situations may have been the difference in this match. The two are expected to meet again many times in the upcoming decade.
This is the future of tennis. The late teen and early-twenty generation (19-21) is full of stars. In addition to Alcaraz and Fils, Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik, Joao Fonseca, Learner Tien, and Alex Michelsen are just a few of the stars of this generation.
Carlos Alcaraz Has Not Played His Best Tennis Yet
Alcaraz has not yet shown us a complete match of high-quality tennis. The quarterfinal against Fils was close, but he can still bump it up. This was a great confidence maker for Alcaraz as he heads to the semifinals against a former Monte-Carlo Masters finalist, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
The remaining semifinal is yet to be determined, but the winners of the Grigor Dimitrov vs. Alex de Minaur match and Lorenzo Musetti and defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas‘s match will meet on Saturday. De Minaur is doing double duty playing Friday quarterfinal matches in singles and doubles.
