Monte-Carlo Masters: Indian Wells Champion Jack Draper Earns Decisive 1st Round Win

The transition from hardcourt to clay court season happens in the blink of an eye. It can take players time to adjust to the peculiarities of the new surface. That was not the case for Indian Wells Champion Jack Draper. He soundly defeated American Marcos Giron in his first round match at the Monte-Carlo Masters by the score of 6-1, 6-1.

Draper is seeded fifth at the tournament, which lost its top seed Alexander Zverev on Tuesday in a grueling three-set match with Matteo Berrettini coming out the victor.
Next up for Draper is the winner of the Tomas Etcheverry and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina match. Davidovich Fokina pulled off an astounding Round of 64 upset over American Ben Shelton, where he shut down his serve.
Jack Draper Is Well Rested And Ready
Draper last played tennis on March 22. He lost in straight sets (two tiebreaks) to eventual Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik. He benefited from the 17 days of rest between matches.
Clay is not his most successful surface. His three ATP titles, earned in the past year and a half, are on hardcourt (2: 2024 Vienna Open and 2025 BNP Paribas Open) and grass (1: 2024 BOSS Open).
Draper has not gotten past the first round in Roland Garros in the past two years, but winning begets winning so the story could be different at the 2025 French Open.

Jack Draper is the only Sunshine Double champion competing in Monte Carlo. Jakub Mensik withdrew before the tournament with a lingering knee issue that almost forced him out of the Miami Open until fate intervened. The umpire was at lunch when he wanted to turn in his withdrawal paperwork.
The Monte-Carlo Masters is among the most scenic and prestigious tournaments on the ATP Tour. Stefanos Tsitsipas is the defending champion who is also playing doubles with his brother Petros. The men’s singles final will be played on April 13.
