NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin, who has yet to earn a Brickyard 400 trophy, posted the fastest practice lap Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but crashed during his qualifying run and will start Sunday’s event P39.
At the other end of the spectrum, Chase Briscoe watched Hamlin, a Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, hit the wall, clinching the pole position for an Indiana native.
Briscoe posted a hot qualifying lap of 183.165 mph, fronting five Toyotas.
Bubba Wallace recorded the second-best time, 0.013 seconds behind the leader. Erik Jones (182.749 mph) was third, Tyler Reddick (182.749) and Ty Gibbs (182.445). Starting sixth, William Byron (182.031) recorded the best qualifying run in a non-Toyota.
When Briscoe, who has five career poles, starts Sunday’s Brickyard 400 from the inside of the front row, it will mark his third “Crown Jewel” pole. He also started up front during the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600.
The Brickyard was special, though.
“Just dreaming of being able to come to this place and sitting in the same grandstands all the fans are, I mean I was dreaming about being on the other side of the fence and now to be able to do that is just unbelievable,” Briscoe said, as reported by WHAS.
Gibbs will face underdog Ty Dillon in the final of the In-Season Challenge on Sunday. Dillon, the No. 32-ranked driver, starts P26.
The winner of last Sunday’s event at Dover, Hamlin signed a two-year contract extension before Saturday’s qualifying mishap along Turn 2, which claimed several machines.
