Is NASCAR Cup Series driver Christopher Bell next?
Over the past two postseason starts, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe qualified for the Nov. 2 Championship 4 event and Bell has a chance to join them Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
Even if he fails to visit Victory Lane in the Round of 8 finale, Bell is in good position to advance via playoff points. The No. 20 Toyota driver sits 37 points above the transition line. No. 4-ranked Kyle Larson is one point behind Bell, who finished P8 at Talladega Superspeedway last Sunday. He and Briscoe, the race winner, were the lone playoff pilots to post top-10 finishes.
“For our organization, today is just a huge day,” owner Joe Gibbs said, via NASCAR Wire Service. “I appreciated the fact that Christopher was able to get everything done that he needed to get done there. Ty (Gibbs) helping Chase was a big deal.
“It’s a total team effort. As you know, in this sport, it takes a lot.”
Hamlin paces the series with six wins this season and Bell added four. Briscoe posted a circuit-best seven poles. So far, JGR has outdueled Team Penske, which fielded the past two championship machines.
Teammates Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney, the past two circuit titleholders, enter Sunday below the cutoff line.
FanDuel Sportsbook tabbed Bell (+250) as the sports-betting favorite to capture his first drivers’ title, while Hamlin (+290) received the second-best odds. Larson, the 2021 series champion, and Briscoe each received +370 odds.
Christopher Bell only needs a solid run at Martinsville to point his way into the Championship 4!
