With questions surrounding the rookie’s ability to drive on ovals in a stock car, Shane van Gisbergen reminded the NASCAR Cup Series of his driving skills.
His 16.567-second margin of victory over runner-up Christopher Bell marked the second-largest margin since 2000. Kurt Busch’s 25.686-second win at Texas in 2009 remains the most significant margin.
Plus, he woke up Sunday morning feeling ill and threw up a few times and endured mid-week travel difficulties. He entered the race No. 33 in the drivers’ standings, led for 60 of 100 laps and departed a postseason contender.
With Mexican-born Daniel Suarez capturing the Xfinity Series race, Trackhouse Racing overcame long odds to sweep the national series events last weekend.
Below, we’ll preview the top storylines heading into Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400 Presented by VISITPA.com, go over the odds, and give our best bets for the 17th race on the 2025 NASCAR schedule.
Cup Series Win at Mexico! 😀🇲🇽 What a big couple of days – felt pretty rubbish today but a massive thank you @SafetyCultureHQ and @TeamTrackhouse. That last stint the car was unreal, watching everyone get smaller in the mirror! pic.twitter.com/F94LvRgs75

The Great American Getaway 400 Storylines
- Three of Hendrick Motorsports’ machines placed in the top 10 at Mexico City, led by Chase Elliott’s season-best P3. Alex Bowman earned a P4 and William Byron P9. Kyle Larson finished P36, but posted the quickest lap (93.78 seconds).
- The Haas Factory Team proved they can adjust on the fly. Several team members were forced to drive from Charlotte, North Carolina, early Friday to Atlanta to catch a flight into Mexico. The team rallied and driver Cole Custer placed a season-best P8.
- Is John Hunter Nemechek becoming a contender? Coming off a P6 after qualifying 32nd, the driver of the No. 42 Toyota registered three top 10s in his past six starts. In his third full Cup season, Nemechek remains winless in 93 outings.
Really proud of this group.

The Great American Getaway 400 Predictions and Picks
Here are our best NASCAR Cup Series bets for The Great American Getaway 400 Presented by VISITPA.com at Pocono Raceway:
Denny Hamlin (+450)
After forging a win and two top-five finishes at Pocono since 2022, Hamlin, the race’s sports-betting favorite, could be refreshed after receiving a waiver for Mexico City. He’ll be driving for his newborn son.
Tyler Reddick (+1000)
Posting an average finish of 3.3 over his past three outings at Pocono, Reddick could use a good run at a comfortable track. He has finished P17 or higher five times in his past nine starts. The 23XI Racing driver ranks sixth in the points standings, but has not qualified for the playoffs. He should be looking forward to the 2.5-mile tri-oval.
Chase Elliott (+1400)
Eager to get back to Victory Lane, Elliott could use a similar break he received during the 2022 Pocono event. After finishing P3, Elliott was declared the winner after Hamlin and Kyle Busch were disqualified. The 2020 champion placed P3 at Mexico City and ranks fourth in the drivers’ standings without a win.
