Mom played favorites Wednesday night at Millbridge Speedway.

And Samantha Busch remained unapologetic for rooting against her husband, Kyle, a future NASCAR Cup Series Hall of Famer. Her 9-year-old son, Brexton, also competed in a 600cc winged micros sprint race at the quarter-mile dirt track in Salisbury, North Carolina.

It marked the first competitive race between father and son.

“I’m rooting for both of them,” Samantha Busch said, as reported by Fox Sports. “But if you had to pick, mostly, I’d have to go with Brexton. Just because he’s my baby.”

The younger Busch is beginning to prove himself against top-level competition. His father compiled 63 Cup wins and collected a national series-high 232 trips to Victory Lane. Before the race, the elder Busch mingled with fans. Samantha did not best to “baby” her son.

“He’s going to be mortified that I’ve just done that … called him my baby,” she said.

Kyle Busch Competes Vs. 9-Year-Old Son, Brexton

Busch, who is slated to compete in the Cup event at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, said ahead of the mid-week event that he would not take easy on his son.

“I’m always competitive,” he said. “The biggest thing I haven’t necessarily given much thought into is my competition and being out there on the racetrack and focusing in on that and not being so worried as much about where he is at or what he is doing.

“Hopefully, I’m not following (Brexton’s) green car. The green car is following (my) blue car.”

Brexton displayed his developing trash talk.

“The other way around,” Brexton said. “Green car, the blue car is following.”

Millbridge is known for attracting families of national series drivers and pit crew members to drive go-karts and sprint cars. Kyle Busch is the track’s defending 600cc champion.

During Wednesday’s 20-lap feature, Payton Johnson spun out along Turn 1 on Lap 6, which allowed Brexton Busch to advance one spot behind his father. They battled each other, but the dad eventually pulled away and finished P3. Joey Robinson earned the checkered flag from the pole in a race that included national series regulars, Lawless Alan and Thad Moffitt. Mother Busch’s favorite earned a P6.

Kyle Busch said he claimed family “bragging rights.”

For now, maybe.
