Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson had their chances Sunday to detour Christopher Bell’s trend-setting start to the season.

With Larson trailing, the Joe Gibbs Racing teammates tangled on the final turn as Bell bumped Hamlin into the wall and edged forward to win by 0.049 seconds, the second-closest finish at Phoenix Raceway.

The win was Bell’s third straight with all three coming at different venues. His trifecta started on a drafting track (Atlanta), continued on a road course (COTA) and was extended on the one-mile tri-oval.

Hamlin was upset initially and cursed over his team radio, but was later relieved they didn’t leave “looking like fools.”

“It’s so hard, especially (racing) a teammate,” Hamlin said, as reported by NASCAR.com. “I mean, we could come out of here looking like fools if we don’t win, one of the two of us, especially controlling the race on the last restart on the last lap. So it’s really, really hard. But, you know, it’s the first time I think I’ve raced Bell for a race win in that kind of scenario. So I just wish I was on the inside, not on the outside.”

Instead, Bell, the first driver to win three straight since Larson in 2021, pulled off the winning inside move. The No. 20 Toyota pilot claimed his 12th career checkered flag, while Hamlin registered his first top-five finish this season.
