NASCAR: Cup Practice & Qualifying

NASCAR Cup Series driver Tyer Reddick wants to show everyone he is a “Beast.”

It is, after all, his primary sponsor for Sunday’s Straight Talk Wireless 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

With Saturday’s qualifying run, Reddick is trending that way. So is Toyota as the manufacturer registered five of the top eight runs Saturday. Toyota also captured pole positions in all three National Series events.

Turning a hot lap of 167.452 mph, Reddick edged Kyle Larson by 0.077 seconds as playoff pilots dominated Saturday’s session. Reddick needs a good start considering he opened the weekend 30 points under the Round of 8 elimination line.

“I think for our group, we ran a really good lap for sure,” Reddick said, via NASCAR.com. “All in all, it was a great day for us and looking forward to the race tomorrow.”

Christopher Bell (166.826 mph) will start P3, followed by two drivers who need points. Denny Hamlin (166.523) starts P4 Sunday and Chase Elliott (165.173) opens P7.

Hamlin sits 27 points behind No. 4-ranked William Byron (165.741) and Elliott remains 53 points behind. Byron captured the 2021 fall race at Homestead-Miami.

Reddick proved his machine was a “Beast” during practice, too, registering the fastest Group A run at 167.77 mph.

Team Penske Crew Chief Jeremy Bullins Departs No. 21 Team

Veteran Team Penske crew chief Jeremy Bullins on Friday announced his departure from the Mooresville, N.C.-based NASCAR Cup Series organization.

“We respect his decision and wish him the best,” Team Penske said in a statement.

Bullins has spent the opening 33 races this season leading the No. 21 Ford team piloted by Harrison Burton for affiliated Wood Brothers Racing.

Bullins did not attend Saturday’s qualifying session at Homestead-Miami Speedway and was expected to lead Burton during Sunday’s Round of 8 event.

Lead engineer Grant Hutchens, who has experience as a fill-in chief, is slated to work with Burton as interim crew chief for the Wood Brothers Racing machine. Burton qualified for the playoffs after claiming the summer event at Daytona, but did not advance out of the first round. The No. 21 team suffered through six DNFs this season.

Burton qualified 34th Saturday.
