The Oklahoma City Thunder have a chance to do something that only two teams in NBA history have ever done. But it will require them to win each of the final seven games on their regular season schedule, and finish out the year on a 17-game winning streak.

Thunder Can Become 3rd Team In NBA History With 70+ Wins

For 20 years, the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls were the only team that ever won 70+ games in an 82 game season in NBA history when they finished with 72 victories. That was until the Golden State Warriors came along, who won 73 games during the 2015-2016 season, which is a record that still stands today. They are considered the two-best regular seasons that the game has ever seen, though only one of the teams went on to win the championship.

This year’s Thunder team has an outside chance of having the third-best regular season ever. With seven games remaining on this year’s schedule, OKC is sitting with a record of 63-12, easily the best record in the Western Conference and three games better than the Cleveland Cavaliers out East.

In order to become the third 70+ win team in NBA history, they’ll have to win each of their final seven games over the course of 13 days. While they do have some tough games left to play with matchups against the Pistons, Rockets, and Lakers (x2) looming, they currently rank 19th in the league in terms of hardest remaining schedules. All four of the aforementioned games will take place over the next week, and then they’ll finish up with contests against the Suns, Jazz, and Pelicans.

The Thunder are already riding a ten-game winning streak, and have been victorious in 16 of their last 17 matchups. But getting to the 70-win plateau would require a winning streak of 17 games, which is something that the team hasn’t done yet this season.

The chances are slim, especially if OKC chooses to rest some of their players down the stretch. They hold a commanding 14.5 game lead over the team in second place in the Western Conference and don’t have much more to play for during the final two weeks other than the 70 wins mark.
