The NFL has ruled on the incident involving Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and a Buffalo Bills fan.

Lamar Jackson Pushes Fan During Game Against Bills

The top storyline from the Bills’ 41-40 victory over the Ravens should have been about the excellent play on the field. Instead, an incident earlier in the game involving a fan became the biggest talking point.

After Baltimore’s DeAndre Hopkins scored a touchdown to put the Ravens up 34-19 in the third quarter, a fan hit the wide receiver on the head while the team celebrated in the corner of the end zone.

The fan then hit Jackson. In response, the two-time MVP shoved the fan before leaving the area.

The fan was ejected and later banned by the NFL from attending NFL games.

On Monday, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh defended his quarterback’s actions.

“We want our guys to celebrate with one another. That’s the whole idea. I guess I didn’t know you’re not allowed to go close to the stands to do that without being attacked by a fan,” Harbaugh said on Monday. “I don’t know how any of us would respond in that moment. I think it’d be something, we’d probably be thinking about protecting ourselves.”

After the game, Jackson apologized and shared that his emotions “got the better of him.” Jackson doubled down on his apology after Wednesday’s practice and offered some advice to himself.

“Just chill next time,” Jackson said via ESPN. “You can talk trash and stuff but keep your hands to yourself.”

Jackson added, “I got pushed. I’m like, what? I wasn’t even thinking about me being out there on the field. My apologies to him.”

NFL Rules On Pushing Incident

After an investigation into the incident, the NFL will not fine or suspend Jackson for the shove.

“The matter has been addressed by the club, and there is no further action from the league,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote in a statement via ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Ravens handled the matter internally, with general manager Eric DeCosta speaking with Jackson about the issue.

“Our player’s safety is of the utmost importance,” a Ravens official told Schefter via ESPN. “We have spoken to Lamar, who understands the impact of the situation, about the incident. While we will keep internal matters private, we have implemented additional security protocols — both at home and on the road — to better protect our players and handle negative fan interactions moving forward.”

The Ravens (0-1) host the Browns (0-1) in Week 2.
