Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud suffered a concussion in Week 9’s loss to the Denver Broncos. Head coach DeMeco Ryans provided an update on Stroud’s status for the Texans’ Week 10 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ryans is wasting no time in declaring his quarterback’s status for Sunday.
The Texans’ head coach announced Wednesday that Stroud will miss Week 10’s game against the Jaguars due to a concussion.
In the first quarter against the Broncos, Stroud suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit at the end of a slide. Stroud exited the game and never returned.
Stroud remains in concussion protocol as the team monitors his progression this week. However, Stroud will not suit up for Houston in Week 10.
Stroud has not missed a game since his rookie season.
Instead, Davis Mills will start for the Texans against the Jaguars. Mills replaced Stroud against the Broncos and finished 17 of 30 for 137 yards in the 18-15 loss.
“[Mills] has started games in his league before, so there’s nothing new for him,” Ryans said via ESPN. “It is a benefit for him, being able to get the reps throughout practice, get walk-through [reps], getting every single rep that he can get. He’s done a good job with that.”
Houston selected Mills in the third round of the 2021 draft, and he started 11 games during his rookie year (2-9).
Mills entered the following season as the starting quarterback after Houston traded Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns. Mills went 3–10–1 in 15 starts.
Mills has completed 612 of 982 passes for 6,327 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions in four seasons.

Following the 2024 season, the Houston Texans fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and hired Nick Caley. The Texans’ offense has struggled in the first year under Caley.
The Texans rank 18th in passing (212.3 yards per game), 19th in total offense (321.1 yards per game), 21st in rushing (108.9 yards per game), and 24th in scoring (21.0 points per game).
The move to Caley was supposed to help Stroud return to how he played during his rookie year. In 2025, Stroud has been decent but not great—1,702 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
The Texans (3-5) now face the Jaguars (5-3) for the second time this season. The Jaguars bested the Texans in Week 3. With the Colts on top of the AFC standings and the Jaguars on their heels, Houston cannot afford to lose this game if they have postseason aspirations.
