Questions on how much longer Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford would compete in the NFL lingered for much of the preseason.
Did the future Hall of Famer have much left in his 37-year-old right arm?
Would the 17-year veteran’s body continue to hold up?
Following last Sunday’s effort against the Detroit Lions, compiling 368 passing yards and throwing for two touchdowns, Stafford led the Rams to a 41-34 victory at SoFi Stadium. The Rams became the first NFC club to qualify for the playoffs.
Stafford claimed the latest showdown against Lions QB Jared Goff, one of the pieces the Rams included to complete the 2021 blockbuster trade.
Since his acquisition, Stafford has amassed 18,422 passing yards, moving into fourth place in franchise history. He trails Roman Gabriel (22,223 yards) for third place.
While longevity questions remain, Stafford (-250) continues to prove he’s on top of his game. He has completed 312 of 470 passes for 3,722 yards, a league-best 37 touchdowns and five interceptions, leading the Rams to an 11-3 mark. BetOnline Sportsbook tagged him with the top odds to earn the 2025 NFL MVP award.
In his five seasons with the Rams, the franchise collected a Super Bowl title and four postseason appearances. A two-time Pro Bowler selection, Stafford likely will earn his first All-Pro selection.
Stafford credits his connection with coach Sean McVay for keeping his game feeling young.
“It’s a huge part of it,” Stafford said, per SI.com. “We spend a lot of time talking about it, spend a lot of time thinking about it, communicating constantly. He comes over, pops (next) to me on the bench, I’m talking to him and he’s talking to me, so I love getting to play quarterback when he’s calling plays.”
