The Dallas Cowboys have released cornerback Trevon Diggs. The two-time Pro Bowler could still join a playoff team looking for cornerback depth. Here are three teams that should sign Diggs.
Cowboys Release Trevon Diggs
Trevon Diggs just called me to tell me the #Cowboys have released him.
While he says he will miss his time in Dallas, he assures me he is healthy and motivated as he looks to join another team looking for another piece to add this postseason.

Instead of waiting until the offseason, the Cowboys released Diggs before Week 18, per NFL Network’s Jane Slater.
Diggs will now go through waivers. If unclaimed, Diggs will become a free agent.
If a team claims Diggs off waivers, they will owe him $472,000 in base salary for Week 18. If he’s active this week, Diggs will receive an additional $58,823, per ESPN’s Field Yates.
Diggs’ biggest problem in the past few years has been his availability. Diggs missed eight games this season because of a concussion suffered off the field when a TV-mount pole fell on his head.
Before the 2023 season, Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension with the Cowboys. Since inking that deal, Diggs has only played in 21 games due to several knee injuries, including a torn ACL suffered in September 2023.
Because Diggs had no guaranteed money left on the deal, he was a likely candidate to be cut.
Diggs has shown he can be a top defensive back when healthy. The 27-year-old has made two Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro in 2021. While he might be a step slower these days, Diggs can still help a playoff team that needs cornerback help.
3 Teams That Should Sign Trevon Diggs
The #Cowboys have waived CB Trevon Diggs with a remaining contract of:
2025: $531,045
2026: $15.5M (non-gtd)
2027: $20.5M (non-gtd)
2028: $21M (non-gtd)Assuming he clears, Dallas will be on the hook for dead cap hits of:
2025: $12M
2026: $5.88M ($12.5M saved)— Spotrac (@spotrac) December 30, 2025
Chicago Bears
For the first time since 2020, the Chicago Bears have qualified for the postseason. Depending on Week 18’s results, the Bears will either be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, meaning they will host a home playoff game on Wild Card weekend.
The Bears’ defense is coming off a game where they surrendered 496 yards of offense to the San Francisco 49ers in a losing effort.
The Bears rank 21st against the pass (222.0 yards per game).
Al Harris, Diggs’ former defensive back coach in Dallas, is now an assistant coach with the Chicago Bears. Because of the familiarity, Diggs could be a natural fit in Chicago.
Pittsburgh Steelers/Baltimore Ravens
I’m counting these two teams as one selection because they both need cornerback help.
The Steelers and Ravens are tied for 29th (245.3) in pass defense.
The two teams square off on Sunday night in Week 18 for the AFC North. The winner moves on to the postseason, and the loser goes home.
Both teams should try to add Diggs as insurance in the secondary for Week 18.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have defied the odds this season with how they’ve responded to injuries.
Two of the 49ers’ most important defensive players, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, suffered season-ending injuries. Yet the team is one win away from earning the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye.
The 49ers’ defense is significantly weaker than the offense this year. The 25th-ranked pass defense (235.6 yards per game) could benefit from adding a name like Diggs to the secondary.
