NFL Rumors: A “Tush Push” Ban Is Gaining Momentum

One of the “secret” weapons for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles is the Tush Push. But there may be an expiration date on how long the team can employ the strategy, as there are rumors that the NFL could be looking to ban the practice for the coming season and into the future.
“Tush Push” Ban Will Be Voted On At NFL Owners Meetings
On her Scoop City podcast that she does with former quarterback Chase Daniel, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini spoke about a potential ban for the unique play that has been a key to the Eagles’ success:
“I feel like it’s getting more momentum in terms of those opposed to it than I’ve ever heard before.”
Whether it is referred to as the “Tush Push” or the “Brotherly Shove”, the practice has become a staple for the most recent league champions, and is almost unstoppable when they employ it. The Buffalo Bills have gotten in on the act, as well, and the two teams have combined to run a version of the play 163 times over the past two seasons. They’ve reaped the benefits, as well, as running the play has resulted in a first down or touchdown on 87% of those attempts.
The 163 attempts is more than the other 30 NFL teams combined.
Momentum around banning the tush push in the NFL is growing, per @DMRussini.

Earlier this off-season, the Green Bay Packers made the first official move in trying to combat the Tush Push. After being defeated by the Eagles in the playoffs this past season, the Packers have filed a formal request for a rule change that would ultimately ban the play. It will be voted on by the competition committee during the owners meetings this coming weekend, and will need 24 of 32 votes in order to be a successful change.
There are some pundits around the league who believe that the proposal won’t get anywhere near the 24 votes needed, but Russini’s report suggests that there could be momentum in the possibility.
