NFL Rumors: Could New Orleans Saints Be In Play For Shedeur Sanders?

After being thought of as an elite draft pick a few months back, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders has seen his stock drop throughout the evaluation process. But new developments with the New Orleans Saints could force their hand in the 2025 NFL Draft, and are a possibility to make Sanders a top-ten selection.
Could Saints Select Shedeur Sanders 9th Overall?
The starting job for New Orleans belonged to Derek Carr, at least for the upcoming season. The 34-year-old has two years left on his current deal and was retained despite rumors that the team was looking to move on. But it was reported on Friday that Carr was dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder, and was one that could potentially keep him out for an extended period and well into the 2025 campaign.
It comes as a tough blow to the Saints, as we are already well past the initial free agency period. The other quarterbacks on the roster are Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener, and Ben DiNucci, who are a combined 0-8 as starters in the NFL. Carr’s absence could force their hand when it comes to acquiring another QB before the start of next season, and they could utilize the upcoming draft to address the need.

Will they wait until Day 2 and select a second or third tier prospect? Or might they take the risk of making Shedeur Sanders the 9th overall pick?
The elder Sanders seems to be interested in the idea. Sheduer’s father Deion retweeted a post by ESPN’s Louis Riddick in the wake of the Carr news, which read, “The 9th pick gonna be all kinds of interesting.” Sanders accompanied his retweet with a “looking eyes” emoji.
Even before the Carr news broke, the Saints were the overall favorites to be the ones to draft Sanders. They are now something of a heavy favorite in that respect, coming in with a current designation of +100. The New York Giants (+500) and Cleveland Browns (+650) are next on the list.
Carr’s first two seasons in New Orleans have been average at best. He has an overall record of 14-13 in 27 starts, and missed 7 games in 2024 due to various injuries. He has thrown 40 touchdowns vs 13 interceptions, and has a lower interception percentage than what he posted in his first nine years with the Raiders.
