Injuries are starting to catch up with the Colorado Avalanche.
Gabriel Landeskog (upper body), defenseman Devon Toews (upper) and forward Joel Kiviranta (lower body) sat out Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to the streaking Anaheim Ducks at Ball Arena in Denver. The Avalanche (34-5-9) have also missed forward Logan O’Connor, who has been sidelined all season following hip surgery.
The Avalanche remain the top-ranked team in the NHL, despite dropping three of four games and five of eight. The curious thing is that the skid has mostly played out at home. Friday’s matchup against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers will end a seven-game homestand.
Over their past 10 outings, the Avalanche averaged 3.8 goals per game. They continue to pace the league with 337 assists. The Tampa Bay Lightning rank second with 298.
BetOnline Sportsbook continues to bank that the Avalanche (+240) will recover from their recent mini-slump, tabbing them with the top odds to capture the Stanley Cup championship. The Lightning (+550) also rank second in the sports-betting odds, with the Carolina Hurricanes (+800) drawing the third-best odds.
The Flyers (23-17-9) enter Friday with seven losses in their past eight outings. Defense has been a problem. They have surrendered 3.9 goals per game.
Can any team in the Western Conference compete right now with the surging Atlantic Division, which employs the league’s top five clubs?
