After turning aside 10 of 11 shots against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, Scott Wedgewood departed with an aching back. The Colorado Avalanche goalie has yet to return.
When Wedgewood departed, the NHL-leading Avalanche were cruising, dropping just one game in regulation through 26 outings.
Medical personnel cleared Wedgewood, who leads the league with 13 wins, of serious concerns. He remains day-to-day.
In the first game without Wedgewood, the Avalanche dropped a 6-3 decision to the host New York Islanders, their first regulation loss since Oct. 25. Backup goalie Mackenzie Blackwood yielded five goals on 41 shots.
Can the Avalanche (19-2-6) continue to fend off the Dallas Stars (18-5-5) for the Central Division lead if Wedgewood misses significant time?
BetOnline Sportsbook listed the Avalanche (+375) with the top odds to win the 2025-26 Stanley Cup championship. The Stars were tabbed with relatively long-shot odds (+1200).
With the Avalanche on a four-game road trip, Wedgewood is traveling with the club, but Blackwood is expected to start Saturday against the New York Rangers during a Madison Square Garden matinee. With three games in four days, could prospect Trent Miner appear in his fifth career game or will Wedgewood test his achy back, proving to Canadian National Team officials he would fit enough to compete during the Winter Games?
