Three American WTA Grand Slam champions scored big wins at the BNP Paribas Open on International Women’s Day.

1. Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion prevailed in a challenging match against Moyuka Uchijima.  Gauff did not play her best in the three-set affair, but she found a way to win despite 21 double faults.

In her post-match interview, she talked about the importance of her return game in light of the service issues.  Gauff will face Maria Sakkari in the next round.  Sakkari has a winning (5-3) head-to-head record against Gauff.

Gauff also discussed her recent investment in the Unrivaled 3X3 women’s basketball league.  Her message about her commitment to this endeavor was especially fitting on International Women’s Day.  She said that she looks for ways to lift women up each day.

2. Madison Keys

Madison Keys, the 2025 Australian Open champion took the court for the first time since her emotional January win over Aryna Sabalenka in Melbourne.  Keys proved that her powerful, hard-hitting game is still on point after a long layoff.

Keys only dropped three games against Anastasia Potapova winning 6-3, 6-0.  Keys will face Elise Mertens in the third round.

3. Taylor Townsend

Taylor Townsend took to the court for her opening Indians Wells match with doubles partner Katerina Siniakova.  The 2024 Wimbledon and 2025 Australian Open champion duo won their first match at Indian Wells, but it came down to a ten-point tiebreak to determine the winner between Townsend/Siniakova and Ulrikke Eikeri and Giuliana Olmos.  Townsend and Siniakova will next face Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Siegemund.

Townsend’s ability to play singles, and doubles, and juggle the responsibilities of motherhood amid the most successful nine months of her career are rarely touted, but they should be especially on International Women’s Day.
