In other American tennis news, Emma Navarro won the Merida Open without dropping a game. The American women are having a phenomenal start to the 2025 season with many titles already in the books most notably Madison Keys Australian Open singles win and Taylor Towsend’s Australian Open doubles win.
Can Gauff Win Indian Wells?
Gauff is enjoying a night of glitz and glamour, but her real goal is to win the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, known as the unofficial fifth Grand Slam. It is a WTA 1000 event that an American woman has not won since 2001 when Serena Williams was the champion.
Gauff, Pegula, and Keys ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, would be the favorites to rewrite American history with Gauff’s 2024 WTA Finals win, Pegula’s win today in Austin, and Keys’ win at Melbourne. However, Navarro, Kessler, and Amanda Anisimova who won titles this year on the hardcourts are contenders.
As for doubles, the last American women to win the title were Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Coco Vandeweghe in 2016. Townsend’s current partner, Katerina Siniakova won it in 2023 with her former Czech mate Barbora Krejcikova. Though it has not been as long, it would be great to see Townsend and Siniakova continue their amazing season with an Indian Wells win.
