The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl last year, but could not make it past the wild-card round this season.
They won the NFC East and finished as the number three seed in the NFC. The Eagles had a good home matchup against a depleted 49ers squad in the wild-card round.
San Francisco was without two star defensive players in Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. Yet, the Eagles could not take advantage of the matchup.
Teams were going off on the banged-up 49ers defense.
Yet, the Eagles could not. The offense has been an issue all season, and in the most important drive of the season, the Eagles’ offense came up short.
A.J. Brown had three catches for 25 receiving yards and had two critical drops in the game. Philadelphia scored two TDs by mid-second quarter. However, after that, they could only manage two field goals the rest of the game.
Changes will need to be made for the Eagles on the offensive side of the ball. The defense bailed them out in numerous games this season.
Philadelphia Eagles Offense Fails Them
Philadelphia could not get anything done on offense in the second half of its wild-card game. They managed just two field goals in the second half against a severely banged-up 49ers defense.
With this failure, the Eagles will need to make some changes on the offensive side of the ball.
Philadelphia Eagles Need To Move On from Kevin Patullo
Kevin Patullo took over the offensive coordinator role this season as Kellen Moore took the head coaching job for the Saints.
Moore led a dynamic offense in Philly last year, which was a huge reason why they won the Super Bowl last year.
However, this season, there was a noticeable drop in offensive production with Moore gone and Patullo as the OC.
Last year, Philly had the second-best rushing attack in the league. They averaged 184.1 rushing yards per game last season. However, this year, they ranked 17th in rushing yards per game, averaging 118.2 rushing yards per game. This is a significant drop in production.
The offensive line has not been nearly as good this year as it was last season.
Philly’s pass attack took a step back this season as well. There was no creativity in the play calling this season.
The Eagles are not shy in making moves, and you can almost certainly expect Patullo to be gone.
Need To Trade A.J. Brown
A.J. Brown has been a major distraction this season, and his play has not warranted putting up with his antics.
He had two critical drops in the Wild Card contest.
Brown would constantly be in the news for things he said or did this season.
While Brown did have a point and was correct in being upset with how the offense looked during the season, he would make his frustrations public, which hurt the team.
Brown is a very talented wideout, but his time should come to an end in Philly. He may even request a trade, which the Eagles should grant.
Philadelphia drafts well and still has WR DeVonta Smith to rely on. Smith is a better route runner and has better hands than Brown.
With Brown being a major distraction, it is time for the Eagles to trade their wideout.
Philadelphia Eagles Need To Revamp Offensive Line
The Eagles had a historically great offensive line last year when they won the Super Bowl. However, this year, they were nowhere near that level.
The rushing attack was why they won the Super Bowl, but Saquon Barkley struggled in many games this season to get going behind the offensive line.
Philadelphia needs to get its offensive line back to what it was a year ago. A combination of better health, as they suffered numerous injuries to offensive line players, and a better offensive scheme will help them get back to an elite level.
Philadelphia Eagles Will Still Be A Threat In The NFC
This was a bad season for the Eagles, but this is a very talented squad.
Even if they move on from WR A.J. Brown, which they should, their offense is still talented. The defense is excellent.
Moving on from OC, Kevin Pattulo is mandatory. Their offense took a major step back this season with Pattulo as OC. Philly will move on from him and hire the right guy this time around.
With a better offensive coordinator, the offensive line will revert to its elite ways, like it was just a year ago.
The Eagles are not going anywhere and will be Super Bowl threats once again next season.
