UNC may have just moved to the front of the line for five-star wing Qayden Samuels. The 6’5” scorer from Maryland picked up a Tar Heels offer shortly after dominating the NBPA Top 100 Camp—and signs point to UNC being in strong position.

Why Qayden Samuels’ Stock Is Soaring

Samuels averaged nearly 27 points and 10 rebounds per game at the NBPA camp, shooting over 50% from the floor and around 37% from three. He was named to the All-Camp First Team and looked like one of the top wings in the country—regardless of class.

That kind of production didn’t go unnoticed. UNC’s staff, including Hubert Davis and Jeff Lebo, were courtside in Rock Hill to see him in person. He followed a 33-point, 10-rebound performance by receiving the Tar Heels offer soon after.

Why UNC Is the Likely Landing Spot for Samuels

A few things make the timing and context of this offer matter:

  • Immediate reaction
    •  UNC saw the breakout firsthand and offered without delay. That level of interest resonates with recruits.
  • Team need lines up
    • Samuels is a left-handed wing who can score from all three levels. UNC’s 2026 class needs perimeter firepower—and he fits that.
  • Recruitment heating up
    • His camp performance vaulted him into the top 20 nationally, and UNC got involved before many other bluebloods reacted.
  • Program prestige
    • UNC’s track record with high-level wings and NBA development is a major selling point, especially as Samuels’ stock rises.

Who Else Is Chasing Samuels?

Samuels has offers from Kentucky, Texas, Alabama, Washington, Syracuse, and Villanova. But many of those schools hadn’t been actively pursuing until recently. UNC’s presence at his best performance to date—and their immediate offer—has likely elevated them above the rest.

There’s no clear timeline for a decision, but unless another program steps up quickly, UNC looks like the early favorite.

What Comes Next?

Next steps to watch:

  • Which programs get official visits?
  • How does Samuels perform in July EYBL events?
  • Does UNC prioritize him as a top-3 target in the class?

Right now, UNC looks like the favorite to land him. The timing of the offer, the need on their roster, and the personal attention from the coaching staff all matter. They saw the breakout in person and responded in rapid fashion. If things hold steady through the summer and no one else makes a stronger push, don’t be surprised if Qayden Samuels ends up in Chapel Hill.
