The Luka Doncic trade is of course the most talked about blunder that the Mavericks made last month. But one of the other trades that general manager Nico Harrison pulled off is coming back to bite them, as Quintin Grimes continued his stellar play by scoring 28 points against Dallas on Sunday afternoon.

Grimes Drops 28 In His First Game Against Mavericks Since Being Traded

Grimes was not much more than a solid rotation player for the Mavericks. He was acquired via trade last summer after playing for the Knicks and Pistons to begin his career, and averaged 3.3 points in 0 starts during his first 10 games with Dallas. He improved upon receiving more playing time as the season wore on, bumping up his average to just over 10 per while starting 12 games between November and January.

A couple of days after the Doncic trade, Grimes was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Caleb Martin. It was seen as something of a lateral move for the Mavericks, who were hoping that Martin’s experience in big games would help aid them in their push for the postseason.

Instead, it took Martin over a month to see the court for Dallas for the first time, and he has scored a total of 23 points in the 5 games that he’s been made available.

The story is the opposite for Grimes. The 24-year-old got off to a solid start with Philadelphia, scoring in double figures in each of his first five games, and has only improved since. He scored a career-high 44 points in an outstanding effort against the Warriors back on March 1st, and put up 25+ in four of the next five contests for the 76ers.

On Sunday, the Mavericks got a first-hand look at the improved player that they traded away last month. The 76ers, in their lone visit to Dallas, defeated their trade partners by a score of 130-125, and Grimes’ success played a big part. He scored a team-high 28 points, and his plus/minus of +14 was the best of any player in the game.

The performance of Quintin Grimes comes as salt in the wound for the Mavericks. Dallas has dealt not only with the pain of the Doncic trade, but have endured a rash of injuries that could force them to forfeit games later in the season due to a lack of rostered players.

The loss is the third in a row for Dallas, who are now 2-10 in their last 12 games. They are still clinging to the 10th and final play-in spot in the Western Conference, but entered the day just 1.5 games up on the Phoenix Suns in that regard.
