The Pittsburgh Steelers face a major decision at quarterback this offseason. Will Russell Wilson or Justin Fields start at quarterback in 2025?

Does The Steelers’ Owner Want Wilson Or Fields In 2025?

On Monday, Steelers owner Art Rooney II spoke to the media about the 2024 season and teased how the team will handle the 2025 offseason.

One of the biggest talking points involves the quarterback decision. Rooney made things abundantly clear that securing a quarterback is the “team’s priority.”

“We have some decisions to make there,” Rooney said about the Steelers’ quarterback options via Bob Labriola. “I thought both Russ and Justin showed promise in certain stretches, and I think they’re both capable of being starters.”

While Rooney believes Wilson or Fields can be the Steelers starting quarterback in 2025, he does not foresee the organization bringing both back.

“I wouldn’t close the door, but I’d say it’s probably unlikely,” Rooney said about having Wilson and Fields on the roster next year. “I think both of them see themselves as starters, and I don’t know that they want to share the same job again next year. So, I would say most likely we probably don’t wind up bringing them both back.”

Wilson and Fields are set to be free agents. Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Steelers after his release from the Denver Broncos. Fields was in the final year of his rookie contract when the Chicago Bears traded him to Pittsburgh for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Wilson Vs. Fields: 2024 Stats

Wilson and Fields began the Steelers’ 2024 training camp in the quarterback competition.

Wilson was named the Week 1 starter by head coach Mike Tomlin. However, Wilson was ruled out for Week 1 after aggravating a calf injury.

In place of Wilson, Fields completed 17 of 23 passes for 1156 yards and rushed for 57 yards in a Steelers’ 18-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record in his six starts.

However, Tomlin demoted Fields to backup quarterback and elevated Wilson to the starter before Week 7.

Wilson won six of his first seven starts to give Pittsburgh a 10-3 record. That would be the pinnacle of Pittsburgh’s season, as the Steelers lost their final five games of the season, including a 28-14 Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Wilson’s 2024 stats: 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions with 155 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Fields’ 2024 stats: 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception with 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

No matter who plays quarterback, the Steelers must add more dynamic weapons on offense, especially at the wide receiver position.
