Steelers Next QB: Rodgers, Wilson Among Top Candidates To Start In 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for their next quarterback. Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are among the top candidates to start for the Steelers in 2025.
Steelers Lost Out On Sam Darnold, Justin Fields

Before hypothesizing who could play quarterback for the Steelers, let’s start with who won’t be under center in Pittsburgh.
Free agent quarterback Sam Darnold signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Darnold was one of the available quarterbacks on the market.
One of Pittsburgh’s quarterbacks last year, Justin Fields, is departing the Steelers for New York.
Field and the Jets agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract, with $30 million guaranteed.
Fields was rumored to be the Steelers’ top choice to start in 2025. However, the 26-year-old opted for a fresh start with the Jets.
Fields started the season as quarterback for the Steelers in 2024. Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record before Mike Tomlin benched him for Russell Wilson.
When the Steelers’ offense cratered toward the end of the regular season, the Steelers noticeably never switched back to Fields.
Fields finished the 2024 campaign with 1,106 yards passing, five touchdowns, and one interception. On the ground, Fields rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns.
Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson In Play For the Steelers

With Darnold and Fields off the board, the Steelers will pivot toward other free agents.
Rodgers will be on the list of quarterbacks the Steelers entertain.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday that Rodgers and the Steelers were in discussions on a deal, but it is not “imminent.”
The New York Jets released Rodgers after two seasons with the team. After missing nearly all of 2023 with an Achilles injury, Rodgers bounced back with a solid statistical season of 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
However, the stats did not lead to wins, as the Jets finished with a 5-12 record.
The Steelers may have to move quickly if they want Rodgers, as the New York Giants have also shown interest in the 41-year-old quarterback.
Wilson is another option the Steelers will consider at quarterback.
It was a tale of two seasons for Wilson in 2024. After taking over for Fields as the starter, Wilson won six of his first seven starts. Then, the season fell off a cliff, as Pittsburgh lost five consecutive games to close the season, including a 28-14 defeat to the Ravens in the Wild Card round.
Wilson finished the season throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
