The Golden State Warriors will be breathing a sigh of relief after Stephen Curry avoided a significant injury.

Late in the third quarter against the Toronto Raptors Thursday, Curry fell on his back after a drive. He remained on the floor for a while, clutching his back and wincing in pain. After consulting with the team’s medical staff, he made his way to the locker room and didn’t return.

Curry has officially been diagnosed with a pelvic contusion and no structural damage. He won’t travel for Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks and will be re-evaluated Monday.

He finished with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 25 minutes. The Warriors went on to win, 117-114. Jimmy Butler led the way with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and two blocks.

Draymond Green was nervous about Curry’s injury after the game.

“He hit that ground hard,” Green said. “You could hear it. It was crazy. Obviously, a very scary moment for us, for him. Hopefully, he’s good.”

Butler Faces Interesting Test With Curry Out

It’s not the most daunting upcoming slate of games for the Warriors. The Hawks, Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs are all sub-.500 teams. Things will get tricky to start next month, though.

Golden State will face the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns to open April. The Warriors would surely love to have Curry back by then.

As far as taking on some of the scoring load in Curry’s absence, expect Jonathan Kuminga to see increased usage.

The soon-to-be restricted free agent has been eased back since returning from injury on March 13 and has yet to hit the 30-minute mark.

There are encouraging signs for the Warriors right now as they’re a tremendous plus-17.4 per 100 possessions when Butler is on the court without Curry. It speaks to the former Heat wing’s ability to raise the level of his teammates, as well as his own superstar capabilities.

You can also be assured Butler will relish the opportunity for aggression during his first game in Miami since the trade.
