Surging Detroit Pistons Will Face A True Test This Week Against Celtics & Nuggets

The Detroit Pistons have been perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2024-25 NBA season. They’ve won seven games in a row, their longest streak in a decade, and are comfortably sitting in 6th place in the Eastern Conference. But their true test will come this week, as they are set to take on both the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets in the coming days.
Pistons Have Now Won 7 Games In A Row
An extended winning streak is impressive for the Pistons, regardless of their opponents. It was just last season that Detroit set the NBA record by losing 28 games in a row, and they had a record of 8-49 at this point a year ago. This year, they were over .500 entering the All-Star break for the first time since 2009, and are now 32-26 and are tied for the longest current winning streak in the league.
Those seven wins haven’t exactly come against the NBA’s elite teams, though. Six of the seven have come against teams with losing records, including the Bulls, 76ers, and Hornets, and their recent victory against the Clippers saw Los Angeles without two of their three top scorers.

They’ll get a chance to truly prove their worth this week. The Pistons will play each of their next three games in Detroit, and they’ll need some home cooking if they hope to take down two championship contenders in back to back games.
Celtics, Nuggets Coming To Town This Week
On Wednesday night, the Celtics come to town. Boston is tied with OKC for the shortest odds of winning the NBA title this year, and are 9-1 in their last 10 games. It will be the fourth and final meeting for the two teams this season, and the Celtics will be looking to wrap up the sweep after winning the first three.
Two days later, the Pistons will play host to the Nuggets. Nikola Jokić and company are now in second place in the mighty Western Conference, and they themselves have won 9 of their last 10 contests. When it comes to their head-to-head record in recent years, Denver has won four in a row and 9 of 10 overall.
While no one is considering the Pistons to be a legitimate title threat in the East, they can turn some heads if they are able to beat one of the top teams in the league. As it stands today, Detroit would take on the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs, and the Pistons have won 2 of the 3 meetings between the two sides this season.
