April Fools Day

ATP and WTA tennis tournaments are ongoing this week, most notably at the US Clay Court Championship in Houston and the Charleston Open, but that did not stop fans from taking a break from all of that on April 1 to circulate some crazy April Fools’ Day jokes on the internet.

Here are three of the most ridiculous tennis-related April Fools’ Day jokes.

1. Roland Garros Is Getting Purple Clay

The French Open, also known as Roland Garros, begins next month.  It has been in existence since 1891.  It has been played on the brownish red clay since 1908.  If there was a remote chance that this Grand Slam was considering purple clay, tennis fans would have heard about it long before now.  The internet joke got some unsuspecting people off guard.

Rebecca Scientist said: “No, that’s ugly !!! Red clay !!! No ugly unnatural color.”

2. Novak Djokovic Is Adding More Legendary Coaches

With Andy Murray already on Novak Djokovic’s team for the spring and summer, one clever person said that Djokovic was going all-in to add more legends to his team, including Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Arturo Hernandez said: “Wow! Such great news. I am sure Nole will go on to break even more records. Maybe even a calendar slam.”

3. Ash Barty Is Coming Out Of Retirement To Challenge Daria Kasatkina

Last week, Daria Kasatkina announced that she would be representing Australia in all future tennis matches.  Also, last week, the Charleston Open had a website error that listed retired Australian Ash Barty as a wildcard player in this week’s tournament.  The internet went crazy over that error, so it wasn’t much of a reach for someone to put together that Barty was returning to tennis to challenge Kasatkina for the top-ranked Australian WTA player position.

Barty is pregnant with her second child and was resolute in 2022 at her abrupt retirement that she was done playing competitive tennis, but tennis fans can still dream.
