Tuesday marked the unofficial start of training camp for the Commanders, who held their conditioning test for the players.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McLaurin did not report to training camp on Tuesday.
McLaurin is entering the final year of his three-year, $68.2 million extension he signed with Washington in 2022. McLaurin’s 2025 base salary is 15.5 million, with only $2.8 million guaranteed.
Per OverTheCap, McLaurin’s contract carries an average per year of $23.2 million, the 17th highest among NFL wide receivers. McLaurin’s teammate, Deebo Samuel, makes $650,000 more per year than McLaurin.
McLaurin’s career numbers are significantly better than Samuel’s and rival some of the top wide receivers in the league. McLaurin has at least 919 receiving yards in six seasons, including five consecutive over the 1,000 mark.
McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, is coming off a 2024 campaign with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. The former third-round pick is extremely durable, having played every regular-season game since the 2020 season.
McLaurin now wants his contract to reflect his production, which is that of a top 10 wide receiver.
Last week, McLauring expressed frustration to reporters over the lack of a new contract.
I’ve been pretty frustrated, I’m not gonna lie,” McLaurin said. “Everything that has transpired up until this point has been disappointing and frustrating. I want to continue my career here. I’ve created my life here.”

What will The Washington Commanders Do With Terry McLaurin?
LIVE: GM Adam Peters and HC Dan Quinn speak to the media before training camp https://t.co/PL4iJtpc8Z
— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) July 22, 2025
McLaurin has stated that he wants to remain in Washington. Judging by the comments made by general manager Adam Peters, the Commanders want McLaurin to stay with the team.
“Without a doubt, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much,” Peters said to the media on Tuesday via Commanders.com. “We knew that coming in, and we knew that even more after spending a year with him. In terms of where we’re at, we’ve had conversations recently, and we’ll look to have some more conversations. And we’re gonna do everything we can in order to get a deal done.”
There are financial ramifications for a potential holdout. McLaurin will be fined $50,000 for each day missed.
McLaurin could show up to training camp and hold in. Even though McLaurin won’t participate in team activities, the Commanders cannot fine him.
McLaurin was an essential part of the Jayden Daniels-led offense in 2024, so locking him up long-term should be a priority.
