Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin has requested a trade. What are the top landing spots for the talented wideout?

Terry McLaurin Requests Trade

It’s been an intriguing few days for McLaurin and the Commanders.

McLaurin wants a contract extension and held out the first four days of training camp to express his frustration. To avoid more fines, McLaurin reported to camp on Sunday. The Commanders could fine McLaurin $50,000 for every day missed.

By reporting, McLaurin avoided fines and executed a hold-in. The Commanders also placed McLaurin on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with an ankle injury suffered last season.

Last week, Commanders general manager Adam Peters expressed the organization’s desire to keep McLaurin.

“Without a doubt, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much,” Peters said to the media. “We knew that coming in, and we knew that even more after spending a year with him. In terms of where we’re at, we’ve had conversations recently, and we’ll look to have some more conversations. And we’re gonna do everything we can in order to get a deal done.”

With the two sides apart, McLaurin has requested a trade, Jordan Schultz reported on Thursday night.

McLaurin is coming off one of his best seasons as a pro. McLaurin caught 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns. McLaurin has at least 1,000 yards per year in five consecutive seasons.

McLaurin also became a top target for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

McLaurin is entering the final year of his three-year, $68 million contract extension. McLaurin is set to make a base salary of $15.5 million this season with a cap hit of $25.5 million.

McLaurin is the 15th highest-paid wide receiver in terms of average per year ($23.2 million). McLaurin is likely looking for an extension that puts his average per year above $33 million.

McLaurin’s age is likely being held against him in these extension talks. McLaurin turns 30 in September and will be 31 when his extension begins.

Potential Landing Spots For Terry McLaurin

Teams are certainly interested in trading for a player like McLaurin. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Commanders have no interest in trading their best wide receiver.

If McLaurin does get dealt, which teams would be a good fit?

The New England Patriots were extremely aggressive this offseason when trying to find a wide receiver. The Patriots signed Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $63.5 million deal. However, it’s essentially a one-year deal because the Patriots could get out of it with a small dead cap ($9.7 million) hit.

The New York Jets are an interesting team for McLaurin, but the recent signing of Garrett Wilson makes things complicated. The Los Angeles Chargers could go after McLaurin because their best receiver, Ladd McConkey, is on a rookie deal.
