Coldest Super Bowl Ever

We’re looking back at the coldest Super Bowl in history ahead of this year’s NFL showdown, with the Eagles and Chiefs set to enjoy the warmth inside New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome.

With so much at stake in the biggest game of the year, we rarely see the Super Bowl played in wintery conditions.

Freezing temperatures, rain, snow and mud are usually reserved for the regular season, but that hasn’t always been the case.

As a rule, the NFL tries to ensure both teams competing in the Super Bowl are on a level playing field.

That’s why the game is often played in a warm-weather city or, like this year, in the controlled conditions of an enclosed dome.

Super Bowl LIX will take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, with the temperature set at 74° year-round.

But while the Eagles and Chiefs will enjoy the warm, dry conditions of an indoor field, some previous years have given us very different weather.

Below, we’ve ranked some of the coldest Super Bowls ever.

When Was The Coldest Super Bowl Ever?

Many fans might immediately think of New York as the coldest Super Bowl in history.

But, surprisingly, Super Bowl XLVIII at the MetLife Stadium is only third on the list.

The temperature at kickoff was 49° as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 43-8 in 2014.

However, while the weather held off on the day, East Rutherford was buried under half a foot of snow just 24 hours later.

Both of the coldest Super Bowls ever actually happened in New Orleans, before the Caesars Superdome was opened in 1975.

Below, we’ve ranked the coldest Super Bowls in history based on the temperature at kickoff.

Super Bowl Location Stadium Temperature (F)
Super Bowl VI New Orleans Tulane Stadium 39°
Super Bowl IX New Orleans Tulane Stadium 46°
Super Bowl XLVIII East Rutherford MetLife Stadium 49°
Super Bowl VIII Houston Rice Stadium 50°
Super Bowl XIX Stanford Stanford Stadium 53°
Super Bowl X Miami Orange Bowl 57°
Super Bowl XI Pasadena Rose Bowl 58°
Super Bowl XXXIX Jacksonville Alltel Stadium 59°
Super Bowl XLIV Miami Gardens Sun Life Stadium 60°
Super Bowl IV New Orleans Tulane Stadium 60°
Super Bowl XVII Pasadena Rose Bowl 60°
Super Bowl XXII San Diego San Diego Stadium 60°
Super Bowl XXVII Pasadena Rose Bowl 60°

While not on this list, Super Bowl LII saw icy temperatures of 2° in Minneapolis back in 2018. Fortunately for players and fans, the fully-enclosed U.S. Bank Stadium was a toasty 70° inside.

Has There Ever Been Snow At The Super Bowl?

To date, the Super Bowl has never been played in the snow.

There have been a few close calls, though. As well as the snow coming a day late in New York, Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta and Super Bowl XLV in Dallas had snow leading up to the game.

And in Detroit, Super Bowl XL had snow on the day. But all of these games were unaffected anyway due to the stadiums being indoors.
