Steelers vs. Bengals Predictions and Odds

Through five games, the Aaron Rodgers experiment in Pittsburgh is working.

Rodgers’ numbers don’t jump off the page — 1,021 yards, 10 touchdowns, three interceptions, a 49.0 QBR, and a 68.8 completion percentage. The Steelers’ offense ranks 28th in total yards per game (277.8).

However, the Steelers’ offense ranks 13th in EPA/play and has scored over 20 points in all four of their wins. Pittsburgh scored 17 points in its lone loss.

The defense is starting to hit its stride. After surrendering over 30 points to the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh’s defense has allowed an average of 14.7 points per game.

The Steelers can also rush the passer at will, which doesn’t bode well for a Bengals offensive line that ranks 27th in run block win rate (69%) and 30th in pass block win rate (50%). Pittsburgh has 20 sacks this season, tied for second with the Seattle Seahawks behind the Denver Broncos (30 sacks).

Veteran Joe Flacco will make his second start for the Bengals since being acquired in a trade with the Browns. Flacco and the anemic Bengals’ offense scored zero points in the first half of the Bengals’ 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Flacco settled in during the second half and threw for two touchdowns in the defeat.

Cincinnati’s lack of a running game is concerning. Chase Brown has been historically bad this season with his 2.7 yards per carry on 74 attempts.

Unsurprisingly, the Bengals have struggled without Joe Burrow — 0-4 this season in games he didn’t start. The offense and defense are near the bottom for scoring and total yards for/against.

Trey Hendrickson, the Bengals’ best defender, is also day-to-day with a back injury.

Mike Tomlin has a good ATS record (25-11-1 ATS) against the Bengals. However, Tomlin, as a big favorite, is not the spot to back the Steelers — 13-26-1 ATS as a favorite of four points or more since 2017.

The Steelers are also 2-8 SU in road games on Thursday Night Football. In a short week, I’ll side with the home underdog.

Pick: Bengals +5.5 (-110)

Steelers vs. Bengals Prop

Until proven otherwise, fading Brown’s props has been the right move.

Brown has not had over 11 carries since Week 2.

This Bengals offensive line is still a mess. I’ll continue to fade Warren until it’s fixed.

Pick: Chase Brown Under 13.5 Carries (-104)
