Wimbledon Day 6: Women’s Singles Will Have Maiden Champion With Rybakina And Krejcikova Losses

On Wimbledon Day 6, 2022 and 2024 Wimbledon champions Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova lost third round matches.  Their exit continues the Wimbledon trend since 2017 of crowning a maiden champion.

Rybakina’s loss was a bit startling.  She fell in straight sets to Clara Tauson.  Krejcikova’s long layoff due to injury caught up with her in a three-set dual with American Emma Navarro.  Barbora Krejcikova was visibly struggling through the third set.  She only played eight matches before today’s third rounder against Navarro because of a long-term back injury.  She was also forced to retire from Eastbourne with a leg injury.

2 Americans Left

Amanda Anisimova and Emma Navarro are the two American women who have a chance to continue the American Grand Slam of 2025 started by Madison Keys at the Australian Open and Coco Gauff at the French Open.

Iga Swiatek Can Play On Grass

Iga Swiatek’s clay court season may have been disappointing by her standards, but she is playing extremely well on her least favorite surface at Wimbledon.  The Bad Homburg finalist gained a lot of confidence in the week before Wimbledon.

She handled Danielle Collins in straight sets who many thought could give Swiatek issues on grass.

A Tennis Mom Could Win Wimbledon

Belinda Bencic is quietly handling her business and into the Round of 16.  Women’s tennis has been waiting for over a decade for another tennis mother to win a Grand Slam.  Bencic is very much in the mix to do so.

It has been an unusual first week of Wimbledon in women’s singles. Anyone who picked more players outside the Top 10 to lead the way into the second week would have been considered crazy prior to this fortnight.  However, that is exactly what has happened.

Aryna Sabalenka (1), Mirra Andreeva (7), Iga Swiatek (8), Emma Navarro (10), Amanda Anisimova (13), Ekaterina Alexandrova (18), Liudmila Samsonova (19), Clara Tauson (23), Elise Mertens (24) and Linda Noskova (30) are the last seeded players in the draw. Sabalenka and Swiatek are the only former Grand Slam champions left in the Round of 16.
