Washington Wizards forward Cam Whitmore has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025-26 season due to upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, the team announced Thursday.
Cam Whitmore To Make Full Recovery
Whitmore has already begun the recovery process for the DVT he was diagnosed with on Dec. 23. The injury is not considered career-threatening, team sources said.
DVT can cause blood clots in the veins of the arms or legs.
If left untreated, the blood clot can potentially travel to the lungs and cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Players who have been diagnosed with DVT have managed to make a full recovery.
Whitmore, 21, joins a growing list of NBA players who have been diagnosed with DVT in the past year.

Last February, Victor Wembanyama was sidelined for the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot found in his right shoulder from DVT.
Damian Lillard was then diagnosed with DVT last March after a blood clot was found in his calf.
Whitmore was selected 20th overall by the Rockets in the 2023 NBA draft out of Villanova. The 6-foot-6 wing spent his first two seasons with Houston before the team traded him to Washington over the summer.
In 21 games off the bench this season, Whitmore averaged 9.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 16.9 minutes per outing while shooting 45.6% from the field and 28.6% from 3-point territory.
Per Spotrac, Whitmore is currently in the third season of a four-year, $15.5 million rookie-scale contract. He’s making $3.53 million this campaign and is slated to earn $5.45 million in 2026-27.
Trae Young Out Through All-Star Break
This news on Whitmore came shortly after Washington released an injury update on Trae Young, who the Wizards acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in last week’s trade deal.
Young is still recovering from MCL and quad injuries on his right leg and will be reevaluated after the All-Star break next month, head coach Brian Keefe said Wednesday.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Wizards are taking a “cautious approach” with the injuries to the 27-year-old. This means Young will miss at least the next 14 games.
“Our priority for him is his health. That’s No. 1,” Keefe said before Washington’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers. “Obviously, we’re going to trust the process with our medical and performance teams. The only thing I have is that we are going to reevaluate him after the break.”
Young sprained his right MCL in late October and missed 22 consecutive games before returning in mid-December. After playing in five of Atlanta’s next six contests, he suffered a right quad contusion that sidelined him for his final six games with the Hawks.
The Wizards continue their four-game trip on Friday against the Sacramento Kings.
