Tallon Griekspoor

The first big upset of the BNP Paribas Open has happened.  Dutch player and World No. 43 Tallon Griekspoor, who was 1-6 against top seed Alexander Zverev in his career, defeated World No. 2 Zverev in a three-set thriller that spanned over three hours where Zverev served for the match.

The match was filled with ups and downs for both players, but the game of the match was the 12th one in the third set.  Leading 6-5 and serving for the match, Griekspoor had five match points and nine deuces. Zverev persevered pushing the match into a third set tiebreaker.

Zverev looked visibly disappointed, and Griekspoor was emotional and jubilant. The final score was 6-4, 7-6, 7-6.

Alexander Zverev’s Quarter Of the Draw Is Wide Open

The highest-seeded player remaining in Zverev’s quarter of the draw is 8th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.  Also in his quarter are 12th seed Holger Rune, 16th seed Frances Tiafoe, and 19th seed Tomas Machac.

With Jannik Sinner suspended until May, the question is which top player will take advantage of his absence to win big tournaments.  Zverev is a likely option despite being ousted early at Indian Wells.  Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is another.  Or could it be another man that no one expects like Tallon Griekspoor?

Griekspoor will face Frenchman and 29th seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round.  The two have never played each other before.
