Madison Keys

Madison Keys has withdrawn from the WTA Finals. She was eliminated from further competition having gone 0-2 in her first Round Robin matches. Key was expected to play her final Round Robin match on Wednesday against Elena Rybakina.

Keys spurred speculation that she was not feeling well when she elected not to shake hands with Amanda Anisimova and the chair umpire after her last match. She is dealing with a virus that has hampered her play.

Mirra Andreeva is the ninth player, and first alternate, on the singles roster. However, in an interesting turn of events, she elected not to play. Andreeva is competing in doubles with Diana Shnaider. The pair are 0-2. They lost on Tuesday in a tight match to Luisa Stefani and Timea Babos where they came from behind after dropping the first set but lost in a deciding tiebreaker. Andreeva and Shnaider have been eliminated from advancing to the semifinals but play their final Round Robin match Thursday against the undefeated team of Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.

Andreeva’s reason for not playing was that she was not fit to play raising concerns that she may also not be well. She narrowly missed qualifying for singles after Rybakina went on a winning run in the last tournaments of the season. It has been a long season physically and emotionally for the 18-year-old Indian Wells and Dubai champion.

Ekaterina Alexandrova is the second alternative and will play Rybakina later today.  While Rybakina has a .500 record against Keys (3-3), she has a losing record against Alexandrova (2-3), but she recently beat her at Ningbo.

The WTA Finals continue through Saturday, November 8. Coco Gauff is the defending champion and is 1-1 in Round Robin and trying to qualify for the semifinals. Iga Swiatek is the 2023 champion and also trying to qualify. Rybakina is the only player qualified for the semifinals. Keys and Jasmine Paolini were eliminated; however Paolini, with Sara Errani, is still alive in doubles.
