The Willie Mullins star mare Lossiemouth won’t run in Tuesday’s feature race at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival – the Champion Hurdle – with connections, instead, opting for the slightly easier Mares’ Hurdle on the same afternoon.

Why Is Lossiemouth Not Running In The Champion Hurdle At The Cheltenham Festival?

Connections of Lossiemouth had been targeting her at the 2025 Champion Hurdle all season. Especially after beating last season’s Stayers’ Hurdle winner Teahupoo in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle earlier this season.

However, the horse has since lost to Constitution Hill in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day and was last seen falling in the Irish Champion Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival.

It’s these two defeats that is believed to be the reason behind Lossiemouth NOT running in the 2025 Champion Hurdle and instead opting for the Mares’ Hurdle. A race she won at the Festival last season and is odds-on to win with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

Patrick Mullins, who rode Lossiemouth last time out, said in a recent interview “don’t blame the player, blame the game” – eluding to the fact the Mares’ Hurdle is an option and without it their hand would have been forced to run in the Champion Hurdle.

Plus, due to the fall last time out, some are also suggesting a fast-run Champion Hurdle will put more pressure on her jumping. As opposed to running against her own sex and over the longer 2m4f trip.

Lossiemouth is also 3-from-3 at Cheltenham, so is a horse that loves the Prestbury Park track. She also landed the 2023 Triumph Hurdle and will head to the 2025 Festival as one of the big Cheltenham bankers.

She’ll face the likes of Jade De Grugy, who was 4th in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival in 2024. July Flower and recent Betfair Hurdle winner Joyeuse are also in the line-up.
