Diogo Jota sinks resilient Toffees with late winner in the Merseyside derby

Diogo Jota scored the only goal in the final Merseyside derby this season, as Liverpool scraped past Everton at Anfield on Wednesday night. See below for Liverpool vs Everton Premier League highlights.

VAR was called into action after 10 minutes for a James Tarkowski foul just outside his own box, and the defender was lucky to escape with just a yellow card despite his follow through connecting with Alexis Mac Allister’s knee.

Although Liverpool were the ones applying all the early pressure it was Everton who found the back of the net first at Anfield, with Beto again breaking the deadlock in the Merseyside derby.

Much to the Premier League leaders’ relief though the goal was disallowed as Virgil van Dijk managed to catch Beto offside in the buildup by a matter of inches.

Beto continued to be a nuisance for the remainder of the first half and with an unfortunate slip up at the back for Liverpool, the Portuguese forward found himself baring down on Caoimhin Kelleher once more.

This time Beto couldn’t convert, as his shot beat Kelleher before smashing off the post and out of play.

The Reds started the second half much better than they did the first and they finally found a way through the Everton back line  thanks to a stunning solo effort from Diogo Jota.

Jota burst into life as the Toffees gave away possession in a dangerous area and after two quick touches in the box, the Portuguese forward rifled in his first goal since January for the lead.

After they scored, Liverpool entered cruise control and saw the rest of the game out with ease, as Everton failed to register a shot on target all game.

Are Liverpool out of sight in the Premier League title race?

Wednesday’s win for Liverpool increased their buffer over Arsenal in second place to 12 points yet again and with just eight games to play, it seems like only a matter of time before the Reds are crowned champions.

Arne Slot’s team has now won four on the bounce in the league and with no other competitions left to contend in full focus remains on the title.

Up next for Liverpool is a trip to Craven Cottage where they will face Fulham who just lost 2-1 to Arsenal in their own midweek clash.
