As we head towards the biggest week on the flat horse racing calendar we look back on how many Royal Ascot winners Aidan O’Brien has trained in his career – as the Ballydoyle handler has another strong squad heading to the Berkshire track.
Aidan O’Brien Has Trained 96 Royal Ascot Winners
The recently retired Sir Michael Stoute trained 82 Royal Ascot winners during his career, but in recent years the 95 Aidan O’Brien Royal Ascot winners has catapulted the Ballydoyle handler to the top of the table.
No handler has now trained more winners at Royal Ascot than Aidan O’Brien and with another big army heading to the Berkshire track in 2025 he’s not finished yet.
With 96 winners, O’Brien’s now doesn’t need many to hit the magic seven. He’s fired in five so far in 2025.
You can see the main Aidan O’Brien Royal Ascot runners in 2025 here – with Stormy Boy one fancy in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes on Saturday.
O’Brien started Royal Ascot 2025 on 91 winners but wasted no time adding to that when winning the Coventry Stakes with Gstaad.
Which was his eleventh win in this Ascot juvenile race – and remains the best race overall at the meeting.
His second winner at the meeting came in the Queen Mary Stakes on day two. Which was Aidan O’Brien’s first ever winner in this race.
He then added Charles Darwin in the Norfolk Stakes and Garden Of Eden in the Ribblesdale Stakes on Thursday.
Plus Trinity College took the Hampton Court Stakes – giving him a day three treble.

What Has Been Aidan O’Brien’s Best Royal Ascot Race?
With nine wins in the Ascot Gold Cup and the St James’s Palace Stakes, these Royal Ascot races have been good for O’Brien.
His prolific stayer Yeats mobbed up four of his nine Gold Cup wins between 2006 and 2009 (see below).
While in the St James’s Palace Stakes his first win in the race came in 2000 with the ultra-tough Giant’s Causeway and his most recent Paddington in 2023.
However, with 11 wins it’s the Coventry Stakes that’s been O’Brien’s best race to date.
The race provided him with first ever Royal Ascot winner in 1997 (more on that below). With his most recent Coventry Stakes winner River Tiber in 2023.
While he added this eleventh success in the race in 2025, when Gstaad won for Ryan Moore (watch below).
How Many Royal Ascot Winners Did O’Brien Train Last Year (2024)?
Looking back to 2024, Aidan O’Brien fired in six Royal Ascot winners (see below).
These included the 2023 Epsom Derby winner Auguste Rodin winning the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.
All these winners for O’Brien were also ridden by Ryan Moore and this year Ascot are giving £5k for every Moore winner at Royal Ascot to the Retraining Of Racehorses Charity.
- Illinois (Queen’s Vase)
- Auguste Rodin (Prince Of Wales’s Stakes)
- Port Fairy (Ribblesdale Stakes)
- Kyprios (Gold Cup)
- Fairy Godmother (Albany Stakes)
- Bedtime Story (Chesham Stakes)

Which Horse Gave Aidan O’Brien His First Royal Ascot Winner?
Rewind back to 1997 and you’ll find not only Aidan O’Brien’s first Royal Ascot winner, but also his first in England.
The horse in question was Harbour Master, who came with a late run up the rail to claim the Coventry Stakes under jockey Christie Roche.
The horse only raced twice more, however, and failed to win again.
