USMNT defender Chris Richards accused CONCACAF of bias after his team lost to Mexico in the Gold Cup final.
Richards, who rose to prominence throughout the tournament, was heavily critical of the match officials in the Cup decider at the NRG Stadium on Sunday, July 6.
He suggested that poor officiating, especially in the second half, cost the USMNT the Gold Cup.
Mexico Beat USMNT 2-1 in Controversial Gold Cup Final
Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mexico in the Gold Cup after failing to preserve their early lead.
Richards scored the opening goal in the fourth minute. His sublime header from a free-kick hit the underside of the cross-bar and bounced beyond the goal line.
Mexico did not let the early goal rattle them, and restored parity 22 minutes later. An inch-perfect through ball from Marcel Ruiz found Raul Jimenez, whose powerful strike from a tight angle crashed into the back of the American net.
In the 66th minute, USMNT star Maximilian Arfsten burst into the Mexican box from the left. He went beyond Roberto Alvarado, but Jorge Sanchez tackled the ball. Sanchez got the ball away from Arfsten, but he lost balance and instinctively grabbed the ball. The US players appealed for a penalty, but the referee, as well as the VAR, shrugged it off.
Mexico scored the winning goal in the 77th minute, as Edson Alvarez’s glancing header found the side-netting of the USMNT goal. The goal was initially ruled out as offside, but the VAR ruled in Mexico’s favour. Pochettino’s men piled the pressure on, but could not find a way past the Mexican resistance.
Chris Richards Blasts CONCACAF After Gold Cup Loss, Throws Away Silver Medal
Chris Richards did not hold back in the post-match press conference, claiming Jorge Sanchez grabbed the ball like NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
“Homie palmed the ball like Shaq in the box,” said Richards (via GOAL).
“That’s CONCACAF for you – they hate us. But we have to just keep moving with it.”
He also said he threw away his silver medal and vowed never to lose to Mexico in the finals.
“I think everyone grieves differently, but I think some people – and I know myself personally it hurt – but maybe it’s something that needed to happen,” he added.

“You take it on the chin and you keep pushing forward. And I promise you we won’t lose anymore finals against Mexico.”
He added:
“I threw my medal away. There’s no point in having a silver medal. I think, as a nation, we strive for greatness. And I think, as individuals, we do, too. So, going forward, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Sunday’s result marked Mexico’s sixth win over the USMNT in eight Gold Cup finals. It will be interesting to see how the USMNT respond to this setback at next year’s FIFA World Cup. As per the best football betting sites, the USA have a 50/1 odds heading into the tournament next year.
