Ahead of Saturday’s Group One July Cup it’s been revealed that Godolphin’s Notable Speech has been supplemented for the big sprint – at a cost of £36,000.
Notable Speech Supplemented For July Cup and Joins Stablemate Symbol Of Honour
Last season’s 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech has been given a shock supplement for Saturday’s July Cup – costing the Godolphin boys £36k.
The 4 year-old will join stablemate Symbol Of Honour, who already holds an entry for the race, in what could turn out to be a two-pronged attack on the Newmarket Group One.
Final declarations for the race will be out on Thursday 10th July at around 10am – with recent Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes third Flora Of Bermuda one of those at the head of the market for Wathnan Racing at 5/1.
However, with Notable Speech now in the race – most firms installed him as the new favourite (just) at around 9/2.
The son of Dubawi was last seen running fourth in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on 17th June (watch below) and prior to that ran fourth again in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May.
Both those races came over a mile, so the interesting factor for horse racing fans is the drop in trip to 6f.
In fact, ALL Notable Speech’s ten career runs have been over one mile.
However, his breeding does give hope the ease in trip might suit. His dam’s sire is Invincible Spirit, who won seven times over 6f – including the Group One Haydock Sprint Cup in 2002.
Notable Speech will join Godolphin’s only other entry – Symbol Of Honour, who has won four of his five starts in 2025 and all over 6f.
Saturday’s July Cup will be shown on ITV Racing at 4:35pm on Saturday afternoon.
Godolphin Also Supplemented Spy Chief For The July Cup
On the same day as supplementing Notable Speech, the Godolphin team also paid out to enter Spy Chief.
This 3 year-old is trained by John and Thady Gosden and was last seen running second in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Trainer Charlie Appleby Has NEVER Won The July Cup
With both Notable Speech and Symbol Of Honour trained by Charlie Appleby, the pair will also be looking to win the race for the first time for the main ‘boys in blue’ trainer.
Despite having a cracking overall 36% strike-rate at Newmarket at the moment – Appleby is yet to land the July Cup at the Newmarket July Festival.
His last runners in the race were Naval Crown, who was runner-up in 2022 behind Alcohol Free, and Creative Force, who was 4th that same year.
Where Will Notable Speech Need To Finish To Get His Supplement Fee Back?
With the July Cup first prize £340,260, then the £36k to supplement him seems a fair gamble.
After all, we are talking about last year’s 2000 Guineas winner and a horse rated 122.
However, if he does fail to win – where does he need to finish to back the gamble pay off?

With a fourth only a £3,800 loss.

Godolphin’s Only July Cup Win Came In 2017
It’s also slightly surprising that Godolphin have only won the July Cup once before.
This success came in 2017 with the Clive Cox-trained Harry Angel (watch below).
The win provided Cox with a second win in the race, having taken the prize in 2013 with Lethal Force.
Both stable winners in the race were ridden by Adam Kirby.
Cox could run his 4 year-old Jasour in the 2025 renewal – as he looks for a third success in the race.
