Rory McIlroy The Star Name at The 2025 Irish Open

The 2025 Irish Open organisers will welcome the world number 2 Rory McIlroy to the K Club – which will be a huge boost for crowd numbers.

McIlroy will, of course, still be buzzing from winning the Masters for the first time earlier this season – and in the process become only the sixth person to complete the career Grand Slam in golf.

He was last seen finishing tied-23rd in the Tour Championship, but hasn’t won an event since his historic Masters in April. With a runner-up in the Scottish Open his best finish since.

Despite this, McIlory is still the clear favourite with the golf betting sites to win this week’s Irish Open at 4/1.

With Tyrrell Hatton next best at 12/1, with Marco Penge and 2009 winner Shane Lowry at 14/1.

McIlroy was runner-up in the Irish Open last year – losing by just a shot to Rasmus Højgaard.

But has winning form when the event has been played at the K Club in the past.

He won the Irish Open prize money back in 2016 at this week’s course, after carding a -12 and winning by three strokes.

Current Champion Rasmus Højgaard WON’T Defend His Irish Open Crown

Last year’s Irish Open winner Rasmus Højgaard will not be in action at the K Club this week – he becomes only the third champ in recent times to miss the following year’s event.

Only Jon Rahm (2020) and Seve Ballesteros (1987) have been past champions that haven’t come back the following year to defend their title.

Højgaard, who will be in action at the Ryder Cup later this month for team Europe, has cited scheduling issues for not playing this weekend.

But the Dane will be back in action at in the BMW PGA next week.

Who Else Is Playing At The Irish Open 2025?

Luke Donald will also be in action at the Irish Open this week as the European Ryder Cup captain will be to see some of this players up close.

One those Europe Ryder Cup players is Shane Lowry, who will be flying the flag for Ireland and trying to win this event for a second time.

Lowry famously won the Irish Open back in 2009 as an amateur and with the weather expected to be testing this weekend – this will certainly suit the world 23.

Fellow Irishman Padraig Harrington, who won this prize in 2007 and was runner-up in 2010, is also playing.

As are Francesco Molinari, Danny Willett and LIV Golf stars Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka.

But, like last year’s winner Rasmus Højgaard – the 1997 winner Sergio Garcia has also opted to miss the tournament.
