US horse racing is more famed for its top flat action – but they do have a growing jumping scene that is advertised again on Thursday – with the Grade One Lonesome Glory Handicap Hurdle, which is run at Belmont At The Big A, in New York.
And this year’s race will have some added appeal for UK horse racing fans – with three jump jockeys that have been based in the UK in the past.
Lonesome Glory Hurdle Sees Three Former UK-Based Jockeys In Action
Nine horses will line-up for the 2025 Lonesome Glory Handicap Hurdle at Belmont At The Big A in New York on Thursday – with three of these entries ridden by some familiar names.
Stephen Mulqueen, who many UK jump racing fans will remember riding Apple Away to win the Grade One Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at the Aintree Grand National Meeting in 2023, is one of the riders in action.
Mulqueen will get the leg-up on the Keri Brion-trained SWORE in the Lonesome Glory Hurdle – and is sure to be popular with the betting sites having won a Maiden Special Weight last time out at Colonial Downs.
The pair also teamed up to win the race 12 months ago, when Freddy Flintshire won the 2024 Lonesome Glory Hurdle (watch below).
UK jump followers can also see two other reconcilable names in the saddle. The race will also be shown on Sky Sports.
Jamie Bargary, who used to ride a lot for the Twiston-Davies team, gets the leg-up on Caramelised.
While Graham Watters who rode last year’s third Evie’s Prince – has been booked to ride another horse this year – Welshman for trainer Jack Fisher.
Watters had an association with the Lucinda Russell yard, when riding in the UK.
The Fisher yard won this prize in 2016 with a horse called Scorpiancer.

Hidden Path, who runs in the same colours as last year’s winner, will be trying to go two places better. He was only beaten two lengths 12 months ago.
While the 2024 fourth Evie’s Prince is back too. He was beaten just over 11 lengths last year (4th) so has a bit more to find this time around.

They send the already mentioned Hidden Path to post as this 5 year-old looks to improve on last year’s third.

Who Was Lonesome Glory – The US Racehorse?
The Lonesome Glory Handicap Hurdle is named in honour of one of USA’s big jumping stars.
Lonesome Glory was foaled in 1988 and died in 2002 – but won over $1m in prize money when racing between 1991 and 1998.
At the time he was the first US steeplechaser to win more than $1m (1,233,669) – when winning races like the Colonial Cup, Carolina Cup and Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase.
In total, Lonesome Glory ran in 42 races – winning 23.
He was owned by Kay Jeffords and trained by Bruce Miller.
