Terence Crawford Next Fight - Boxing

Undisputed super-middleweight champion Terence Crawford was held at gunpoint and handcuffed by Omaha Police Department last night. But why?

Since his arrest at his victory parade in his home town to celebrate his victory over ‘Canelo’, Crawford has been released without charges.

Why Was Terence Crawford Arrested?

After successfully dethroning Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 13 to become the first three-division undisputed boxing champion in history, Terence Crawford returned to his home town of Omaha to celebrate his monumental victory.

Thousands of fans took to the streets of Omaha to welcome home their hero, who defeated ‘Canelo’ via unanimous decision at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas over a fortnight ago.

Everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of Crawford, who is now widely regarded as a top three or even single fighter in the latest pound-for-pound boxing rankings.

Everything was going to pan with celebrations well underway, until things took a drastic turn with a video of Crawford being held at gunpoint by police went viral on social media.

The reason for Crawford’s arrest is due to supposed dangerous driving. In turn, Omaha Police pulled ‘Bud’ over before ushering him out of the car at gunpoint.

After a brief stand-off with the police officers, Crawford was released without charge. However, this doesn’t detract from the fact that the five-weight world champion was held at gunpoint and handcuffed by Omaha Police.

As it transpires, it has been reported that the 38-year-old wasn’t even driving dangerously, making his arrest even more baffling.

This footage has gone viral on social media, with people questioning the treatment and handling of ‘Bud’.

Why Was Terence Crawford Held At Gunpoint and Handcuffed?

The reason for Terence Crawford’s arrest which then resulted in being held at gunpoint and handcuffed was due to supposed reckless driving.

There were several other people inside the car with Crawford at the time. It is unknown if one of those was Terence Crawford’s wife Alindra or any of their six children.

Following the incident after ‘Bud’ was released, Omaha Police Department made the following statement:

“While speaking with the driver, an officer observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

“The driver was later identified as Mr. Crawford upon verification of his driver’s license and was issued a citation for reckless driving. One passenger, a member of Mr. Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm.”

After being released without charge, boxing fans and everyone are questioning whether the treatment of the 42-0 undisputed king was necessary at all or if it was completely overboard.

John Ewing, Mayor of Nebraska, has since confirmed in a separate statement that an internal investigation into the incident will be conducted.

In terms of Terence Crawford’s next fight, the undisputed super-middleweight king has plenty of options. He will likely take a six-month rest before making any decisions, but has certainly got an abundance of options going forward.

These include remaining at 168-pounds and defending his undisputed belts, or perhaps even moving down to middleweight in an attempt to become a six-weight world champion.
