Redemption of Harry Maguire: From Captaincy Loss to New Man United Deal

Two years ago, Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the Manchester United captaincy, handing the armband to Bruno Fernandes.

Now, he stands as a symbol of redemption under Ruben Amorim, on the verge of extending his contract at Old Trafford.

On Thursday, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed Manchester United had expressed interest in extending Maguire’s contract.

The English centre-back is out of contract in June 2026, and Man United have met with his representatives to discuss a renewal. The club are happy with his performance and leadership, and see him as an essential part of Amorim’s project.

Harry Maguire Fell Quickly and Embarrassingly at Man United

Manchester United signed Harry Maguire from Leicester City in a whopping ÂŁ80 million deal in the summer of 2019. The following winter, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named him captain. Initially, Maguire justified Solskjaer’s call, popping up with decisive goals and important defensive actions. But it all went downhill quite quickly.

Between October and November 2021, Maguire produced three miserable performances. After making costly defensive errors in the defeats against Leicester City (4-2) and Liverpool (5-0), Maguire got himself a red card against Watford.

Man United were already down 2-1 at the time of his dismissal and eventually lost 4-1. In the aftermath of the defeat, Solksjaer lost his job.

In the summer of 2022, Erik ten Hag came on as Man Utd boss and Maguire’s minutes started to wane. He only played 16 Premier League matches in 2022/23, clocking only 762 minutes.

In April 2023, Maguire produced a shocking performance against Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals. He scored an own goal in the first leg and was responsible for Sevilla’s opener in the second.

The Spanish side won 5-2 on aggregate, and Maguire’s prominence under Ten Hag took an unsalvageable hit.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Maguire lost his captaincy, and was seemingly on his way out of the club. West Ham United were close to signing the former Leicester City man, but the deal ultimately collapsed.

Maguire stayed at Man Utd for the time being, but most fans and pundits had written him off.

Maguire Has Had a Quiet Redemption Under Amorim

Harry Maguire’s career got a second wind at Manchester United after Ruben Amorim took charge of the club. The Portuguese coach showed faith in the 32-year-old from the start and persuaded the club to trigger a one-year contract extension in January 2025.

Before the start of the 2025/26 season, Amorim made Maguire a part of Man Utd’s six-man leadership group. To the coach delegates smaller tasks to the group, making them responsible for running the team smoothly.

In August 2025, Maguire captained Man United in the League Cup clash against Grimsby Town. Maguire scored a fine goal but the game ended in an embarrassing defeat for the Mancunians. The defeat saw the pressure on Amorim multiply, as market odds established him as one of the leaders in the Premier League sack race.

Maguire has started just two Premier League games under Amorim, coming off the bench in four others. The numbers are not particularly flattering, but Maguire’s importance stretches well beyond the stats.

Maguire is one of the cornerstones of the team, one of the few players Amorim trusts. Amid all the uncertainty surrounding Man Utd, a leader of Maguire’s calibre is worth holding on to.
