Thyestes Chase Tips and Best Bets

See Andy Newton’s 1-2-3 Thyestes Chase betting tips below and key stats that can hopefully help put history on your side ahead of Thursday’s big Gowran Park race.

A contest, don’t forget, that produced the 2025 Grand National winner last season – Nick Rockett.

Thyestes Chase Runners Headed By JP McManus Featherweight Entry

Considering the competitive nature of the Thyestes Chase, it’s not been too bad a contest for the favourites – with six of the last 23 going in (26%).

This year’s jolly looks to be the JP McManus-owned Better Times Ahead, who could also be thrown-in with just 10st 5lbs to carry.

The Thyestes Chase trends also tell us that 13 of the last 23 winners carried 10st 9lbs or less.

JP McManus won this race just two years ago in 2024 with Ain’t That A Shame, who went onto run sixth in the Grand National.

However, like most renewals – this year’s race looks set to be dominated by a certain Willie Mullins, as he goes in search of win number eleven.

Mullins has SIX of the 21 runners (reserves included) with a maximum of 18 horses allowed.

Plus, with Gordon Elliott also mob-handed with five entries – this means they’ve got 11 Thyestes Chase runners between them.

But with the Gordon Elliott form a bit iffy at the moment, I’m happy to keep Mullins on side here. As he heads into the meeting on a 30%+ SR with his runners.

Don’t forget, of the Mullins ten wins haul in this race – he took the pot 12 months ago with Nick Rockett, who went onto win the Grand National at Aintree later that season.

Mullins ‘Captain’ Paul Townend To Steer Home Another Closutton Thyestes Chase Winner

Paul Townend Has Won The Thyestes Chase Three Times

As we all know, the main Mullins jockey Paul Townend would have been able to pounder the six Closutton Thyestes Chase entries.

So, the fact he’s landed on CAPTAIN CODY has to hold a lot of weight.

And this alone could see this 8yo even go off as favourite – we’ll see.

Captain Cody does have a big weight (11-10) but that’s for a reason – he’s a Scottish Grand National winner.

Yes, he’s also rated 10lbs higher than that Ayr win last April.

However, has done well since – to run third to Romeo Coolio at the end of November in the Grade One Drinmore Chase.

Then more recently was a fine 7th (beaten 9 1/4 lengths) at Leopardstown in the Listed Paddy Power Chase over Christmas.

Townend Would Have Had The Pick Of The Mullins Runners

It’s also interesting that of the Mullins runners, Townend rode High Class Hero and Quai De Bourbon in their last races.

Therefore, the fact he prefers Cody should be noted.

Captain Cody, who is 20/1 for the Grand National, is also a course winner (hurdles) here at Gowran Park.

Which is a plus and we know the likely heavy ground will be fine too with form on it reading 1-2-1.

He’s also the same age as last year’s winner Nick Rockett (8).

Meaning there’s a lot to like and so CAPTAIN CODY is the call to lead the others home.

Of the rest, his consistent stablemate High Class Hero has claims too.

After running a close third in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown last season.

And should have more to come over fences with just five starts.

While last year’s fourth Yeah Man, was joint-favourite 12 months ago too, is taken to go well again after returning this season with two nice runs at Navan and Leopardstown (two seconds).
