Kerry National Favourites Have A Poor Record

If you are thinking of just blindly backing the 2025 Listowel favourite, you might want to think twice.

The market leader in this Listowel race has won just once in the last 23 runners and none have gone in over the last 11 runnings.

However, in what looks a tight betting heat this year, you might have to wait until right near the off to find the final Kerry National favourite with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

With the likes of You Oughta Know, Three Card Brag and San Salvador all in contention for the jollies berth.

The Kerry National Trends Tell Us Horses Aged 7 and 8 Have The Best Records

With a massive 80% of the last ten Kerry National winners being aged either 7 or 8, then this is the standout age trend to have on your side.

Of the 18 runners, here are the 7 or 8 year-olds – You Oughta Know, Three Card Brag, Pied Piper, Thecompanysergeant, Spanish Harlem, Anyway, Sandor Clegane, Sea Music, Shecouldbeanything, Arctic Fly, Busselton (Res), who won this in 2022. Plus – Duffle Coat, Monbeg Park, In Excelsis Deo (Res)

But last year’s winner Flooring Porter did defy this stat – winning as a 9 year-old.

In short, 19 of the last 23 winners were aged 8 or younger in this horse racing contest.

Trainers Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Joseph O’Brien Are Respected

If you like following the form of trainers in certain races, then ahead of the Kerry National you should certainly have Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Joseph O’Brien on your radar.

The trio have won the race seven times between them in the last 23 runnings – meaning a 30% strike-rate over this period.

Last year’s winning trainer was Gavin Cromwell and he tries again – this time with Thecompanysergeant.

This year in 2025 Mullins has the possible favourite in You Oughta Know – plus, Spanish Harlem and Arctic Fly.

Elliott has Duffle Coat, Three Card Brag, Pied Piper and Shecouldbeanything.

While Joseph O’Brien has his 2022 winner Busselton and the 9 year-old San Salvador.

Note Horses That Ran At The Galway Festival That Season

With eight of the last 23 Kerry National winners having run at Galway last time out, this is another trend to look back at.

Backed up again in 2023 with Desertmore House running at the Galway Festival before taking this – he won at Kilbeggan in between these races too.

These horses ran at Galway this season – Three Card Brag, Thecompanysergeant, Anyway, San Salvador, Sea Music, Sandor Clegane, Shecouldbeanything, Arctic Fly, Pied Piper and Duffle Coat.

Horses Carrying 10st 10lbs or Less Have The Best Recent Record

In 2018 the classy Snow Falcon won the Kerry National with 11st 5lbs on it’s back and last year’s winner Flooring Porter had 11st-4lbs.

But generally, this is handicap race that’s gone to horses carrying a lot less.

The 2023 winner Desertmore House had 10st 6lbs, while 80% of the last 10 winners had just 10st 10lbs or less and 7 of those only 10st 6lbs or less.

This year, this means quite a few have this weight stat to overcome with the 150-rated Pied Piper heading the weights with 11st 12lbs.

But this year it’s a much tighter handicap race with only 15lbs between the lot.

Those at the foot of the weights and racing between 10st-13lbs and 10st-11lbs are – You Oughta Know, Sea Music, Le Coq Hardi, San Salvador, Nara (Res), Arctic Fly, In Excelsis Deo (Res), Busselton (Res).

Having Raced In The Last 2 Months Has Been A Plus

Next up is to look for horses that are fit from a run within the last two months.

This is backed up with ALL of the last 23 Kerry National winners having raced within the last 9 weeks.

So, if this trend is to carry on – here are the runners coming back from longer breaks to potentially ignore.

In Excelsis Deo, Nara, Light N Strike, Spanish Harlem, French Dynamite, Monbeg Park and Salvador Ziggy.

Course Experience Is Worth Looking For

Finally, having raced here at Listowel in the past is another big plus – with 17 of the last 23 winners (74%) falling into this bracket – with six of the last seven winners having already be victorious here too.

Those that have won here are – Salvador Ziggy, Thecompanysergeant, Shecouldbeanything, Outside The Door, Busselton (Res) and San Salvador.

Which Horses Tick The Most Kerry National Trends?

๐Ÿ‡Anyway – Unseated in the Galway Plate last time out but was too early in the race. Beat the expected favourite You Oughta Know at Kilbeggan before that and is only 2lbs worse off. Also ran well at this meeting last season (3rd).

๐Ÿ‡Arctic Fly – Willie Mullins runner and despite jockey Paul Townend jumping off her to ride You Oughta Know, you suspect it might have been an easy decision. This 7 year-old mare was a close second at Galway last time out and is only 2lbs higher. Plus, with just five career runs over fences should have more to come.

๐Ÿ‡Sea Music –ย Another that unseated last time out at – this time at Killarney. Was a fair 4th before that at Galway and is a pound lower this time. Gets in here with just 10-13 to carry and regular rider Donagh Meyler gets the leg-up.
