The 2025 Grand National weights were released on Tuesday 11th February, with the 2024 winner I Am Maximus being handed 8lbs more than last season.

As a result, the Willie Mullins-trained horse will look to become the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win the National with 11st 12lbs or more.

I Am Maximus Top 2025 Grand National Weights With 11st 12lb To Carry

If the JP McManus-owned I Am Maximus is to defend his Grand National crown he’ll have to do it rated 8lbs higher.

The handicapper released the 2025 Grand National weights at the annual lunch on Tuesday 11th February – giving the Wille Mullins 2024 hero the top burden of 11st 12lbs.

This means he’ll be looking to become the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win the National with more than 11st 9lbs – with Rummy lumping 12st to victory that year.

Many Clouds in 2015 holds the record for carrying the most weight since then – when he shouldered 11st 9lbs.

However, despite being rated 8lbs higher – this actually means with the top-weight capped at 11st 12lbs I Am Maximus will actually carry 6lbs more in racing weight – having won with 11st 6lbs 12 months ago (watch below).

2025 Grand National Weights Revealed With Last Year's Hero I Am Maximus Rated 8lbs Higher

Willie Mullins Reacted To The Grand National Weights

“It’s topweight and it’s tough but we had an idea that it would be tough. He’ll probably run in the Bobbyjo and we’ll see how he is.

“He likes the track. Sometimes when horses go back a second time they don’t like it and we’ve got all that to take into account. Horses go round it once and the second time it can be different, but he had a good experience last year and I’m hoping that it won’t be a problem.”

JP McManus Runners Dominating

The best horse racing betting sites in the UK have installed I Am Maximus as one of the market leaders – alongside another JP McManus runners Inothewayurthinkin and  Iroko.

McManus has won the Grand National three times – with Don’t Push It (2010), Minella Times (2021) and I Am Maximus (2024).

Which is the same as Trevor Hemmings and the Gigginstown House Stud.

Handicapper Martin Greenwood Said

“He’s on an 8lb higher mark this time around. In 2024, he won off the same mark that Tiger Roll won his second National off of in 2019 – 1lb off the rating of 2015 winner Many Clouds, which was 160.

“Many Clouds ran off 166 the following year and I Am Maximus is 1lb higher than that on 167. So, if he is successful again, he will make history by winning off of the highest mark seen in the 21st century.”

A Maximum Of 34 Runners Will Line-up For The 2025 Grand National

The Grand National maximum runners now stands at 34 (used to be 40 in 2023), which means the horses near the magic 34 mark will be hoping some ahead of them pull out of the Aintree race between now and April 5th to stand a chance of getting in the final line-up.

At the moment the Henry De Bromhead-trained Senior Chief is number 33, with a whole host of runners on the same mark (150) behind him.

Meaning – if it stays like this – the horse with the higher rating (come the day) will get in, which might encourage some horse racing connections of these horses to get their horses on the track.

Grand National Weight Trends – 25 of the Last 33 Winners Carried 10st 13lbs or LESS

Some recent winners have carried 11st (or more) – including I Am Maximus in 2024 with 11st 6lbs.

However, looking back at recent trends it seems history says to make 10st 13lbs your weight cut-off point.

We’ve only seen the mighty Red Rum (1974 & 1977) and Many Clouds (2015) carry 11st-8lbs or more in recent times. With 25 of the last 33 (76%) winners carried 10-13 or less – including three of the last four winners in Corach Rambler (10-5), Noble Yeats (10-10) and Minella Times (10-3).

Eight of the last 33 winners (24%) carried 11st or more. While only Many Clouds (11st 9lbs) in 2015 has lumped more than 11st 8lbs to victory.

Plus, the last horse to win with MORE than 11st 9lbs was Red Rum (12st) in 1974.

  • 25/33 – Carried 10st 13lbs or less
  • 18/33 – Carried 10st 8lbs or less
  • 8/33 Carried 11st or more
  • 1/33 Carried 11st 9lbs more more

Can The 2025 Grand National Weights Change Before The Race?

No, the 2025 Grand National weights that were revealed on Tuesday 11th February are now set in stone. Meaning if an intended Grand National runner does well in a race between now and April 5th, their weight won’t change.

In contrast, if a horse performs badly between now and the Grand National their weight also won’t unfortunately move.

What Weights Did The Last 10 Grand National Winners Carry?
