This Saturday will see the 21st running of the Betfair Chase at Haydock – one of the big early jumps season Grade One contests – but you might be shocked to hear that this year’s winner will win LESS than Kauto Star banked in 2006.
Betfair Chase Prize Money 2025 Will See Winner Pocket Less Than 2006 Winner
Okay, boosting your bank balance by £112,540 for winning one horse race is certainly not to be sniffed at.
However, when you hear that this is less than the winner of the same race got back in 2006 – you might be a bit annoyed as an owner.
This is exactly what will happen this weekend as the 2025 Betfair Chase prize money will be £112,540 – which is £1,500 less than Kauto Star walked away with in 2006.
Kauto Star went onto win the race three more times in his career.
Plus in total, won £453,812 in this race alone and a staggering £2,375,883 in prize money from all his races.
In 2006 Kauto Star also scooped jump racing’s Triple Crown £1m bonus after winning the Betfair Chase, King George VI Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
But this bonus is no longer in place for these three ITV Racing contests.
In fact, since the race was first run in 2005, the Betfair Chase prize money has really changed a lot in 20 years.
You can see below how not much has differed over the last 20 runnings of the Haydock race.

2025 Betfair Chase Prize Money £4k Less Than Last Year
The Betfair Chase has been a good race for past winners going in again.
Since the race was first run in 2005, we’ve seen nine past Betfair Chase winners take the prize again.
With these coming from five horses – Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti, Cue Card, Bristol De Mai and Royale Pagaille.
With the most recent Royale Pagaille, after this Haydock lover has won the last two renewals of the Betfair Chase.
He’ll be back for more in 2025 aged 11 and will be looking to become the joint-oldest winner along with Kauto Star.
But if he is to win again – he’ll have to settle for £4,309.41 less than 2024.

Snoopy Loopy Has Won The Most Betfair Chase Prize Money – Which Came In 2008
The other strange thing, regarding the Betfair Chase prize money, is the horse that’s banked the most came back in 2008 – which was only fourth running of the race.
Peter Bowen’s Snoopy Loopy defied the odds that year to win at 33/1 – but the good news for his connections is that year saw the most prize money for the winner.
Past Betfair Chase winner Snoopy Loopy banked £127,341 in 2008 – which is still £14,801 more than the 2025 winner will get.
He’s still the longest-priced Betfair Chase winner in the history of the race.
In fact – did you know? ALL of the other winners have returned just 9/1 or shorter.

Who Is Favourite To Scoop The Betfair Chase Prize Money in 2025?

We can expect a small but select number of Betfair Chase runners in 2025.
The winner for the last two seasons Royale Pagaille will be hoping for a sixth Haydock win over fences and despite not winning a race since his 2024 win here – he’s a hard horse to ignore at this track.
We should also see the 2025 Irish Grand National winner Haiti Couleurs, with champion jockey Sean Bowen in the saddle.
Can he continue his upward curve as connections test the water here for a possible Cheltenham Gold Cup tilt?
But the likely Betfair Chase jolly will be last year’s second Grey Dawning as he looks to go one place better.
12 months ago he looked to have the race in the bag, until being outgunned over the last few furlongs by Royale Pagaille.
However, is another year older and wiser, plus hails from the Dan Skelton yard who can do little wrong at the moment.
Skelton’s only previous win in the Betfair Chase was in 2022 with Protektorat – but, of course, was assistant at the Paul Nicholls yard for many of their successes.
